(Orem, Utah - Oct. 3, 2024) - For the first time in program history, the Trailblazer volleyball team topped Utah Valley sweeping the Wolverines on Thursday night at Lockhart Arena.
Utah Tech (9-4, 3-0 WAC) picked up its third straight win to start WAC play completing its fifth sweep of the season downing Utah Valley (10-5, 1-2 WAC), 25-17, 25-21, 25-23.
The Trailblazers were led in kills for the 11th time this season by
Kennedi Knudsen, who tallied 12 kills, seven digs and five blocks.
Sophomore libero
Mya Laufiso registered a team-high 13 digs while junior middle blocker
Casidy Fried totaled eight blocks.
Jumping out to 12-11 lead in the opening set, the Trailblazers went on a 4-0 run to extend their lead to five after a UVU attack error.
A 3-0 run for the Blazers pushed their lead to six (20-14), but the Wolverines cut UT's lead down to four (21-17) before the final four points of the set went to the Trailblazers with a kill, a pair of attack errors and a block by
Nana Asiata and and
Lusia Langi.
With UVU taking a 16-14 lead to start the second set, a 5-0 run for the Blazers got Utah Tech back into the lead after a service ace by
Meg Carter.
The Wolverines responded with a 5-1 run to take a 21-20 lead, but again the Trailblazers were clutch down the stretch scoring the final five points of the set notching three straight kills and a pair of attack errors for the 25-21 set win.
As they did in set two, the Wolverines led early, taking a 16-10 lead. The Blazers answered with a 5-1 run to cut UVU's lead down to a pair at 17-15, but a 4-1 run for UVU pushed their lead back to five at 21-16.
A kill and service ace by Treanor ignited a final 9-2 run for the Trailblazers to complete the sweep getting a kill from Knudsen to close out the match.
Utah Tech led the Wolverines in hitting percentage (.162-.008), kills (36-31), service aces (7-6), blocks (12-11) and digs (53-51).
The Trailblazers close out the week on Saturday afternoon making the short trip to Southern Utah (6-8, 2-1 WAC) for at 1 p.m. contest at America First Event Center.
