Trailblazers Tripped Up at Utah Valley

Utah Tech men's soccer came up short against Utah Valley 2-1 in a chippy, physical match at Clyde Field on Monday night. The Wolverines stole all three points on a goal scored with 19 seconds left in the match.

Sophomore Austin Wallace struck first for the Trailblazers. On a long ball from junior Tyson Nguyen, Wallace dribbled down the far side of the field and deftly beat UVU goalkeeper Ben Williams at his near post.  The Wolverines punched back with a goal of their own in the 28th minute. UVU senior Nate Kovalcik headed the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal off a Utah Valley corner kick.

In the 34th minute, junior Anthony Godinez challenged Williams down the middle but was stopped by the keeper.

Utah Tech goalkeeper Stockton Short stopped back-to-back shots in the 56th minute, getting in the way of a volley and then scrambling to the near post to stop a rebound effort and keep the match tied at 1-1.

In the 73rd minute, sophomore Samir Cuevas juked out a UVU defender and fired a shot that was saved by the far post. Junior Daichi Saito collected the rebound but got under his shot and missed high on the second effort.

Cuevas had a shot saved at the near post after he ripped a shot from a through ball by sophomore Miguel Regino in the 86th minute.

Sophomore Jason Buezo launched a shot to the right post in the 87th minute but Williams was ready for it.

UT's final chance came in the 89th minute when senior Gavin Coe's far free kick was sent on target but caught by Williams before the goal line.

The Wolverines scored on a chaotic sequence in the 90th minute. The ball took an awkward bounce on a Utah Valley cross into the box and UVU redshirt junior Zach Lifferth got a touch to flick the winning goal into the bottom left corner of the goal.

Utah Valley (7-5-4, 2-3-2 WAC) outshot UT 9-7, but the Trailblazers held a 6-4 lead in shots on goal. The Wolverines nearly tripled the fouls of Utah Tech (3-9-4, 2-4-2 WAC), committing 23 to just nine by the visitors. UVU finished with five saves and UT totaled two.

Utah Tech will wrap up the regular season by hosting UNLV on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 1:30 p.m. at Greater Zion Stadium. The Trailblazers will honor their graduating seniors with senior day festivities before the match.
