Utah Tech football was not able to withstand a first half Texan avalanche as the Trailblazers were handed a 42-0 road loss at No. 11/13 Tarleton State on Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.
The shut out loss was the Trailblazers' (0-7/0-3 UAC) first in their brief NCAA Division I FCS era, and it broke the program's 109-game scoring streak. The shut out was also just the fourth in the program's four-year era overall, and was the first since the 2013 season finale at home vs. Central Washington (44-0; 11/16/13).
The Trailblazers found themselves in a quick 14-0 hole just eight minutes into the game thanks to a pair of Kayvon Britten touchdown runs, including a 62-yard scoring scamper on the third play of the game.Â
Â
Tarleton State (6-1/3-0 UAC) would tack on a Braelon Bridges 3-yard touchdown dive and another Britten score later in the frame and led 28-0 after the first 15 minutes. The Texans added two more touchdowns on their first two second-quarter possessions on their way to a comfortable 42-0 cushion at the halftime intermission.Â
Â
Meanwhile Utah Tech struggled to get anything going offensively as the Trailblazers committed two first-half turnovers, were forced to punt four times, missed on a field goal chance, and had another drive end on downs.
Â
Utah Tech was held to 222 yards of total offense the night, with 138 of those yards coming through the air. Freshman quarterback
Bronson Barben got his first collegiate start and finished with 129 yards on 17-of-40 passing.Â
Â
The Trailblazers also gained 84 yards on the ground, with redshirt junior
Chris Street leading the way with 39 yards on eight carries.Â
Defensively, sophomore
Brevin Hamblin racked up a game-high 10 tackles, marking the second-straight game the safety recorded double digits in tackles. In addition, redshirt defensive back
Gabriel Valenzuela tallied a career-high nine tackles and recorded his second-career interception in the second quarter.
Tarleton finished with 476 yards of offense, with Britten accounting for 135 yards on the ground with three touchdowns. Former Utah Tech quarterback
Victor Gabalis threw for 201 yards on 10-of-13 passing, all in the first half, with one touchdown toss.Â
Â
Utah Tech returns home for a UAC matinee against Austin Peay next Saturday afternoon, Oct. 19. Kickoff inside Greater Zion Stadium is set for 2 p.m. (MT).
