Despite four players in double figures, Utah Tech women's basketball was done in by a cold-shooting third quarter as the Trailblazers were felled at Stephen F. Austin, 76-67, on Thursday night inside the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
How it happenedÂ
Utah Tech (8-8/2-3 WAC) trailed 14-9 in the early going, but a
Calyn Dallas transition steal sparked a 7-2 spurt that pulled the Blazers even at 16-16.Â
Â
Maddie Warren cashed the steal in with a fast break lay-in, while
Breaunna Gillen poured in four points around a
Maggie McCord 3-pointer.
Â
SFA (10-6/4-1 WAC) closed the first quarter scoring with a perimeter jumper, but the Trailblazers would turn the tables on the Lady Jacks in the second by hitting on 3-of-5 from downtown to open the second stanza en route to a 27-23 lead with 6:22 to go in the first half.
Â
Warren bookended the rally with a pair of 3-pointers, while Dallas managed to give Utah Tech its first lead of the night with a 3-ball from the left wing at the eight-minute mark of the period.
Â
However Utah Tech was not able to build upon its two-possession advantage, and SFA eventually wrestled the lead away and took a 34-33 into the locker room.Â
Â
SFA ambushed the Trailblazers out of the halftime break, outscoring Utah Tech 11-3 to open up a 45-36 lead at the 6:09 mark of the third quarter.
Â
Gillen stopped the rally, albeit briefly, with a mid-range jumper, but the Lady Jacks would go on to score 12 of the final 16 points of the frame to take a commanding 57-42 cushion into the fourth period.
Â
Trailing 69-47 with a little over six minutes remaining, Utah Tech rattled off a 10-0 run to trim the Lady Jack lead to 12 at 69-57 with 3:29 left after a Gillen lay-in.
Â
But the deficit proved to be too much to overcome as the Blazers would suffer their third WAC loss of the season.
Â
Numbers to know
Macie Warren and Gillen co-led the Trailblazers with 16 points apiece.
Macie Warren wound up with her fourth double-double of the year as she pulled down a co-team high 10 rebounds.
Â
Meanwhile Gillen offset a 4-of-13 shooting night by going 8-of-8 at the foul line. Gillen also just missed her second double-double of the year as she finished with nine boards to go with three assists.
Â
Maddie Warren wound up with 15 points, and Dallas tallied 14 points along with a career-high three steals.Â
Â
Utah Tech was held to a season-low 29.6 percent (21-of-71) from the floor, which included a 25.6 percent (10-of-39) clip from beyond the arc. However the Blazers did shoot 71.4 percent (15-of-21) at the charity stripe.
Â
The Trailblazers were outrebounded by SFA by a 45-44 count, though Utah Tech held a 14-7 edge on the offensive glass. Utah Tech also turned the ball over a season-low six time, but was only credited with six assists on its 21 made field goals.
Â
Kurtsyn Harden paced four Lady Jacks in double figures with 15 points. SFA hit 28-of-62 (.452) from the floor, which included an 8-of-25 (.320) effort from the perimeter.
Â
Utah Tech opens a four-game homestand next Thursday night, Jan. 18, with an in-state showdown vs. Southern Utah. Tip-off inside the Burns Arena is set for 7 p.m.
