Rusick Nets Late Game-Winner in Victory Over Colorado State

Trailblazers defeat the Rams, 3-2.

(Fort Collins, Colo. – Sept. 14, 2023) Trailblazer women's soccer was in action Thursday night, defeating Colorado State 3-2 at the Rams' practice field in Fort Collins. The result moves Utah Tech back to .500 at 4-4-1 with a home contest against Idaho State scheduled for Sunday.

Jordyn Denton returned to the starting 11 as the Trailblazers broke things open early off the foot of Lacy Fox, who found a look and finished for her third goal of the season off a feed from Brynlee Rider. Just 14 seconds later, it was once again Fox who struck, once again off a Rider feed, doubling the lead and her goal total for the 2023 season.

CSU fought back with a goal in the 35th minute as Utah Tech took a 2-1 lead into the halftime break, but Colorado State found the leveler it was looking for early in the second half, scoring in the 50th minute.

Fox would force another save in the 61st minute but the Rams would continue to find looks at goal, but Brianna Frey stepped up with multiple saves to keep the game level at two.

Then, with just 32 seconds left in the game, Ella Rusick struck from just near the penalty spot to put Utah Tech ahead for her first collegiate goal. Coming off the end of yet another Brynlee Rider pass, Rusick and the Trailblazers rode out the final 30 seconds to secure a 3-2 road victory.

All four of Fox's shots were on target as Colorado State held a 19-6 advantage in shots. The Trailblazers took two corner kicks ans drew seven Ram fouls while Brianna Frey made four saves in net. Frey, alongside Denton, Gracie Knutzen and Mauri Ashman played the full 90 minutes.

With three assists in the game, Brynlee Rider becomes just the fifth Trailblazer ever to record at least three assists in a single game, tying Jasmine Arollo (2014) and Erin Beeston (2009) for second most in a game. The program record of four is held by Tana Singley (2017) and Shannon Larsen (2009).

Utah Tech women's soccer returns to action this Sunday, hosting Idaho State. Nine Trailblazer seniors will be recognized prior to the game for their outstanding contributions to the program.
