Utah Tech junior defensive lineman Syrus Webster has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2023 Buck Buchanan Award on Thursday.
The 2023 Buck Buchanan Award, presented by FedEx Ground, is presented annually to the national defensive player of the year at the NCAA Division I FCS level.
Webster (6-4, 255; West Jordan, Utah/West Jordan HS) is coming off a stellar sophomore campaign in 2022, which saw him earn first team all-Western Athletic Conference accolades after he co-led the conference in sacks (5.5) and led the Trailblazers with 10.0 tackles for loss.
The junior-to-be finished the 2022 season with 42 total tackles (22 solo) and tallied at least three total tackles in nine of 11 games played. In addition, Webster racked up four quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles, one pass break up, and collected Academic all-WAC honors.
Webster was also named to the 2023 Phil Steele and Blue Bloods All-United Athletic Conference preseason first teams.
The Trailblazers, who opened their fall camp earlier this week, will kick-off the 2023 season on the road at No. 3-ranked Montana State on Saturday, Sept. 2, in Bozeman.
