(Omaha, Neb. – Aug. 20, 2023) Utah Tech women's soccer was in action Sunday afternoon, playing the Omaha Mavericks to a scoreless draw at Caniglia Field. The result marks UT's first clean sheet of the 2023 season and concludes an undefeated opening weekend.
Â
Sporting the same starting lineup that defeated South Dakota on Thursday, the early portions of Sunday's contest were an evenly-fought battle, with the Mavs taking the game's first shot just four minutes into the game. Though the hosts had a 2-0 advantage in shots across the first 15 minutes,
Brynlee Rider,
Karli Heaton and
Mylee Carver would force Omaha saves in the half's final 30 minutes as UT out-shot Omaha 4-2 (3-2 on goal) in the opening period.
Â
Utah Tech would create several more chances in the second half and looked close to breaking the deadlock in the 55
th minute. After a ball from deep within the Trailblazer midfield,
Lacy Fox got behind the Maverick backline and found a look, but her shot was saved by Omaha's goalkeeper to keep the game level.
Â
In the 75
th minute, Omaha almost found the opener off a corner kick and ensuing scramble in the box, but Utah Tech was able to clear it off the line and keep the game level at zero. Despite both teams ramping up pressure in the waning minutes, neither would score and the game went final as a scoreless draw.
Â
Emily Garbett's two shots (one on goal) led the team as Utah Tech would finish with eight total shots (four on goal) while taking five corner kicks and drawing four Maverick fouls.
Brianna Frey made four saves while posting the first shutout of her career as she along with
Gracie Knutzen and
Michelle Rodriguez would play all 90 minutes.
Â
Trailblazer women's soccer returns to St. George for a pair of home games next weekend, hosting Idaho (Aug. 24, 7 p.m.) and Nevada (Aug. 27, 1 p.m.) at Greater Zion Stadium.
