Utah Tech closed out its fourth WAC series sweep of the season with a 16-6 road victory at Southern Utah on Sunday afternoon at Kathryn Berg Field. 
 
With the series sweep, the Trailblazers (31-16/16-5 WAC) extended their lead in the WAC standings to two full games over second-place Grand Canyon (40-11/14-7 WAC) with three games conference games remaining in the 2023 regular season.
 
Utah Tech left no doubt that a series sweep would be in the offing as the Trailblazers sent 12 batters to the plate in a seven-run first inning, and owned a commanding 12-3 lead after four innings were in the books.
 
The Thunderbirds (6-30/3-18 WAC) spoiled the Blazers' bid to end the game by run-rule in the fifth inning with a three-run rally, which sent the game to the sixth with Utah Tech up 12-6. 
 
Utah Tech then padded its lead with one run in the sixth and three more in the seventh for good measure to close out the game. 
 
The Trailblazers outhit SUU 16-10, with Hannah Hughbanks going 5-for-5 with a double, four RBI and two runs scored. Lauren Almeida also drove in four runs as part of a 2-for-4 day with two walks and two runs scored, while Shea Clements and Carly Eldredge each collected two safeties apiece. 
 
Utah Tech will look to clinch its first WAC regular season title next weekend when the Trailblazers welcome in-state rival Utah Valley to Karl Brooks Field for a three-game series. Game one of the series will be played on Friday at 12 noon, followed by a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 12 noon.
