Cameron Gooden led four Trailblazers in double figures with 22 points as No. 11 seed Utah Tech recorded its first-ever NCAA Division I postseason victory with an 80-76 overtime upset of No. 6 seed Stephen F. Austin in the first round of the Hercules Tires Western Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament on Tuesday night at the Michelob ULTRA Arena.
Â
The Trailblazers (14-18) will advance on the face No. 3 seed Southern Utah in the WAC quarterfinal round on Thursday night at the Orleans Arena at 8 p.m. (PT).Â
Â
With the game tied at 71-71 with 1:13 to play in overtime,
Isaiah Pope drove baseline and banked in a leaner from six feet out. The junior guard drew a foul on the play and hit the free throw to complete the three-point play to give the Blazers the lead.
Â
Then after a big defensive stop on SFA's (19-13) ensuing possession, Pope found a cutting
Frank Staine for a wide open backdoor lay-in to make it a two-possession game at 76-71 with 30 seconds left.Â
Â
Utah Tech would go on to knock down 3-of-4 from the line in the closing seconds to clinch arguably the signature victory during the program's current NCAA D-I transition.
Â
Gooden scored 14 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to record his seventh 20-plus point game of the season. The senior guard also finished with five assists, two rebounds and one steal.
Â
Meanwhile Staine tallied 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers, including a trey in overtime as he accounted for seven of the Blazers' 18 points in the extra frame.
Â
Pope also filled the stat sheet with 14 points, five assists and four boards, and
Dancell Leter tallied 12 clutch points off the bench, six of which came in overtime, highlighted by a steal and breakaway dunk that got the Trailblazers' momentum going.
Â
Utah Tech shot 49.1 percent from the floor (27-of-55), including a perfect 5-of-5 in overtime with two 3-pointers. The Trailblazers connected on 6-of-20 (.300) from the perimeter and went 20-of-27 (.741) at the foul line. UT also outrebounded SFA 37-31 and finished with 15 assists on its 27 made field goals.
In addition to it being his program's first-ever D-I postseason win, Head Coach
Jon Judkins also collected his 300th NCAA coaching victory (300-170; .638).
Â
Latrell Jossell paced four Lumberjacks in double figures with 17 points. SFA went 29-of-65 (.446) from the field, which included a 5-of-19 (. 263) clip from beyond the arc.
