Utah Tech picked up its second WAC series win of the season thanks to a sweep of New Mexico State in a Saturday doubleheader at Karl Brooks Field. The Trailblazers (20-10/5-1 WAC) rallied past the Aggies to claim game one, 5-4, then rode a solid pitching performance from
Kate Dolinski to clinch the series win with a 4-1 triumph in the nightcap.
Â
In the opener, the Aggies (13-13/2-4 WAC) broke the seal in a scoreless game with a two-out, three-run Riley Carley home run in the third inning.Â
Â
Utah Tech used the long ball to get back into the game in the home fourth, when after
Hannah Hughbanks doubled to lead off the frame,
LB Kahahawai-Kekona clubbed her first collegiate home run over the left field fence to make it a 3-2 game.
Â
The Trailblazers would pull even three batters later when
Marisa Rubio tripled to right field to chase home pinch runner
Brooklyn Dowdle carrying the tying run.Â
Â
The game remained tied until the sixth when NM State pulled ahead on a run-scoring groundout.
Utah Tech answered in its half of the frame with a two-out, two-run
Carly Eldredge homer that gave the Blazers' their first lead of the game. Sophomore hurler
Attlyn Johnston (W, 7-3) made that lead stand as she retired the Aggies in order in the seventh to close out the win.Â
Â
The Trailblazers collected eight hits in the opener, with Hughbanks accounting for three of those safeties. Johnston struck out a career-high 11 and scattered four runs and nine hits over seven innings to earn her seventh win of the season.Â
Â
Utah Tech led wire-to-wire in the series finale, striking for two first-inning runs thanks a Kahahawai-Kekona two-out single.
Â
Then after NM State cut the Blazer lead in half with a run in the fourth, the Trailblazers plated two more runs in the sixth on a
Lauren Almeida lead-off homer and a
Madisen Duryea pinch hit RBI-single.
Â
The run support was more than enough for Dolinski (W, 5-1), as the fifth-year season fanned a career-high nine and surrendered only the one run and five hits in seven-innings complete in her finest outing of the season.
Â
Utah Tech returns to action this Monday afternoon with a non-conference home date against in-state foe BYU. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
