Utah Tech completed a sweep of its 2023 Western Athletic Conference opening series with a 14-9 road triumph at Abilene Christian on a frigid Sunday afternoon at Poly Wells Field.
Leading 5-4 after three complete, the Trailblazers (18-9/3-0 WAC) scored nine unanswered runs over their next two offensive frames to open up a commanding 14-4 lead.
Utah Tech struck for six runs on the strength of seven hits in the fourth, four of which were doubles, including a pair of two-RBI two baggers from
Shea Clements and
Rachel Campbell.
The Blazers added on three more runs in the fifth, thanks to consecutive RBI-singles from
LB Kahahawai-Kekona and
Laura Lockard, while
Oaklee Trapp would cap the rally with a run-scoring flyout.
ACU (6-23/0-3 WAC) managed to extend the game to the sixth inning after a Bubba Rote two-out, three-run double. The Wildcats mounted one more rally in the seventh, scoring two runs on back-to-back singles and an error with no outs in the inning.
However Blazer reliever
Tyler Denhart would come on and induce a back-breaking double play and worked around a two-out walk to close out the series sweep.
All nine Trailblazers in the starting line-up recorded at least one hit as Utah Tech outhit ACU 17-10. Clements finished the day going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and four runs scored. Meanwhile
Lauren Almeida doubled and homered as part of a 3-for-4 effort with two RBI and three runs, and Kahahawai collected three hits and drove in two runs.
Utah Tech returns home for a three-game WAC series vs. New Mexico State next weekend at Karl Brooks Field.
