Utah Tech dropped its third-straight after a 3-1 loss to in-state foe BYU on Thursday afternoon at Karl Brooks Field.
The two sides battled to a hitless stalemate through the first three innings before the Cougars (12-6) broke through with all three of their runs in the fourth inning, two of which came on a Hailey Morrow two-run home run.
Utah Tech (15-9), which was held to just two hits through the first five innings, got one of the those runs back in the sixth to get on the scoreboard.
Tanya Windle tripled to lead off the frame and would scamper home on a one-out
Hannah Hughbanks ground out.
Lauren Almeida and
Shea Clements would keep the inning alive with consecutive two-out hits to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. However BYU hurler Kaysen Korth (W, 8-2) retired
Oaklee Trapp on strikes to end the rally.
The Trailblazers had one more chance in the seventh after a
Rachel Campbell drew a one-out walk, but Korth fanned the final two Blazers she faced to end the game.
Utah Tech was limited to just five hits on the night, with Almeida collecting two of those safeties.
Utah Tech heads to the Lone Star State to open its 24-game WAC slate with a three-game weekend series at Abilene Christian this Saturday and Sunday.
