Utah Tech could not overcome a late Seattle U second half run as the Trailblazers fell just short of their first WAC road win of the season after a 75-71 loss on Wednesday night inside Climate Change Arena.
How it happened
It was raining 3-pointers in the early going, especially for Seattle U (17-8/8-4 WAC), which hit on five of its first six perimeter jumpers to open up a quick 19-9 lead six-plus minutes into play.
The Trailblazers (11-14/3-9 WAC) then got hot from 3-point country themselves, as
Cameron Gooden and
Tanner Christensen knocked down back-to-back threes.
Redhawk forward Riley Grigsby would answer with a pair of treys, but
Dancell Leter and Gooden countered with threes of their own, as Utah Tech trimmed the deficit to 25-21 two minutes later.
In all, both teams combined to hit 14-of-17 from beyond the arc in the opening 10 minutes, with UT going 6-of-8 from downtown, while Seattle U went 8-of-9 from beyond the arc, as the Redhawks clung to a 28-25 advantage midway through the period.
Both teams them came back down to earth, combining to go nearly four minutes without any points until Redhawk guard Cameron Tyson hit a three.
Frank Staine quickly answered on Utah Tech's next trip down, which was followed by a
Trey Edmonds lay-in to draw the Blazers to within a point at 31-30.
However Utah Tech could not wrestle the lead away as both sides traded scores over the final four-plus minutes of the frame, which ended with Seattle U taking a 41-38 cushion into the locker room.
After a
Jacob Nicolds 3-pointer pulled the Blazers to within one at 46-45 with 18:27 to go in the second half, Seattle U would rattle off eight-straight points over a three-plus minute span to vault to a commanding 54-45 advantage.
Noa Gonsalves would finally stop the drought with a 3-pointer, and the trey would spark a 15-2 Trailblazer run that erased the Blazers' deficit and gave Utah Tech its biggest lead of the night at 60-56 with 7:26 to go.
Staine and Gooden would both hit from the perimeter in the rally, which featured nine-unanswered points that was capped by a
Trey Edmonds steal and breakaway jam.
The Redhawks went more than five minutes without a field goal until Tyson ended the Blazer run with a lay-up and free throw with 6:46 to go.
Nicolds would stretch the Blazer lead to 65-61 with another 3-pointer with 4:13 left. Unfortunately that would be the only field goal Utah Tech would hit over the next four minutes as Seattle U rattled off a back-breaking 14-3 run en route to a 75-68 lead with 16 seconds to play.
Grigsby scored seven-straight points to start the run and accounted for nine of the Redhawks' 14 points.
Staine made it a two-possession game with a 3-pointer with 4.2 seconds left, and the Blazers would force a Seattle U turnover on its ensuing possession, but a Staine desperation heave after the miscue missed the mark as the Trailblazers lost their fourth-straight to the Redhawks overall.
Numbers to know
Gooden led four Trailblazers in double figures with 17 points, though he was limited to five points after halftime. The senior shot 5-of-8 from the floor, including a WAC season-high four 3-pointers (4-of-5), and dished out a game-high six assists.
Gooden has now scored at least 10 points in 16 of the 19 games he has played in this season, and in six-straight since his return to action from injury.
Staine continued his solid play off the bench as he tallied 13 points on 5-of-10 from the floor with three treys and a co-team high five rebounds.
Nicolds (114 career games), who became Utah Tech's career leader in games played on Wednesday night, added 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers.
Gonsalves finished with 10 points on 4-of-7 from the floor with two made 3-pointers, which vaulted him into seventh place on UT's single season list (50 3FGM).
Utah Tech shot 47.1 percent for the game (24-of-51), which included an even 46.4 percent clip (13-of-28) from the perimeter. The Trailblazers also hit on 10-of-15 (.667) at the foul line and tallied 17 assists on their 24 made field goals.
Utah Tech broke its single-season record for made 3-pointers when Staine hit the Blazers' last trey in the final seconds. UT has now hit 220 3-pointers this year (220-of-569; .386), which eclipsed the previous record of 219 set last year in 31 games.
Tyson led all scorers with 24 points, with 15 of those coming from beyond the arc (5-of-9 3FG), while Grisgby poured in 21 with four made 3-pointers.
Seattle U connected on 44.6 percent (25-of-56) from the floor and was 11-of-25 (.440) from 3-point country. The Redhawks also went 14-of-17 (.824) at the charity stripe and outrebounded Utah Tech by a 30-28 margin.
