Trailblazer softball opens season at Hawaii Tournament

UPCOMING:
Utah Tech will fly out to Honolulu to open up the season at the Hawaii Tournament. UT will take on Hawaii three times and Saint Mary's twice over the course of three days. The first pitch will be thrown on Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. (MT).


ROOT ROOT FOR THE HOME TEAM: 
Utah Tech is 288-81 overall at home. 
The Trailblazers are 245-67 at home under head coach Randy Simkins. 
During the 2022 season, UT finished with a 12-12 home record. 


ON THE ROAD AGAIN: 
Utah Tech is 177-103 overall on the road. 
The Trailblazers are 155-82 on the road under head coach Randy Simkins.
During the 2022 season, UT finished 6-18 away from Karl Brooks field.


SEASON OPENERS: 
Utah Tech is 9-7 in season openers in the NCAA era.
The Trailblazers are 6-5 at home in season openers and 3-1 when starting a season on the road. 
Head Coach Randy Simkins is 7-6 in season openers while at Utah Tech. 


RECORDS AND STANDINGS
The Trailblazers ended the 2022 season with a 19-32 overall record and finished at No. 5 in WAC West Division with an 8-16 record. 

Coming into 2023, UT was picked No. 8 in the WAC Preseason Coaches Polls and had Hannah Hughbanks along with Shea Clements selected to the WAC Preseason All-Conference team. 


CONSISTENT SPOT: 
Last season Utah Tech had two Blazers filling consistent starting spots in all 51 games of the line up. Laura Lockard locked down third base while sophomore Lauren Almeida started at shortstop in every game. Kasey Crawford made appearances in all 51 games and Shea Clements started in 50. All four of them return for the 2023 season.


SIMKINS' 500 
Randy Simkins is on his way to his 500th NCAA Career victory. He currently has a 472- 202 record as a four-year NCAA coach. He is just 28 games away from hitting 500 NCAA wins. 


He hit a career milestone in the 2021 season with his 500th win as a head coach. On April 10th against Grand Canyon on, The Trailblazers came from behind putting up four runs in the final two innings to defeat the Lopes by a 4-2 score giving Simkins the milestone win. In his first year with the Trailblazers, 2004, the team went 49-6 in the junior college ranks.


BLAZERS RAKE IN POST SEASON AWARDS
Utah Tech placed three Trailbazers in the WAC post season awards. Hannah Hughbanks and Shea Clements were both named to the First Team while Carly Eldredge was named to the second team.  


HUGHBANKS' EARNS WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Not only was Hannah Hughbanks named to the All-WAC first team but she was also named to the Defensive Team and was named Defensive Player of the Year. She ended the season with a .993 fielding percentage, helped the Trailblazers to a league high of 17 double plays, and was sixth in the conference in putouts (288) as well as total chances (302). 


HUGHBANKS' HITTING THE GAP
Senior Hannah Hughbanks has recorded 43 doubles in her career. In the 2022 season she recorded 17 to push her to the No. 4 spot on the teams all-time doubles list.


BYE BYE BALL:
Utah Tech had 10 Blazers who hit it out of the park last season. Shea Clements lead the team with 10 home runs. Rachel Campbell had nine of her own and Lauren Almeida had six. Kasey Crawford and Laura Lockard had five apiece. Hannah Hughbanks had three, Oaklee Trapp and Madisen Duryea had two. Brylee Rudd and Phoebe Schultz each had one.

8 of the 10 are returning for the 2023 season.

 
All Time vs Hawaii: This years tournament will be the first time the Trailblazers have taken on Hawaii.


Know Your Foe: Hawaii comes into the 2023 season after finishing the 2022 season with a 23-19 record. They went 17-10 in conference play and finished in third place in the Big West Conference.


All Time vs Saint Mary's: This years tournament will be the first time the Trailblazers have taken on Saint Mary's.


Know Your Foe: St. Mary's comes into the 2023 season after finishing the 2022 season with a 16-31 record. They went 4-11 in conference play and finished fifth place in the West Coast Conference.
