Utah Tech softball completed a sweep of its 2023 home-opening round robin tournament with a 6-5 walk-off victory over in-state foe Weber State on Sunday afternoon at Karl Brooks Field.
Â
The Trailblazers won all four games on the weekend to improve to 9-5 overall.
Â
Trailing 2-1 after two innings complete, Utah Tech struck for three unanswered runs over its next two offensive frames en route to its first lead of the day at 4-2. The Blazers pulled even in the third thanks to a two-out
Rachel Campbell single that chased home
Oaklee Trapp carrying the tying run.
Â
Carly Eldredge then led off the UT fourth with a single ahead of
Hannah Hughbanks, who blasted her second home run of the weekend over the fence in straight-away center field to give the Blazers a two-run cushion.
Â
The Wildcats (5-9) quickly tied it an inning later with a long ball of their own as Lauren Hoe answered with a two-run homer to center with one out in the stanza to tie the game at 4-4.
Â
Utah Tech would jump back on top at 6-5 in the home sixth when
Shea Clements picked up the Trailblazers' second two-out RBI on the day with a double to right center.
Â
However the Blazers could not protect their lead in the seventh as a pair of Weber State lead-off singles and an error put Wildcats on second and third with no outs.Â
Â
Freshman pitcher
Sauren Garton (W, 4-1) induced a groundout for the first out of the frame, then survived a scare one batter later when Wildcat outfielder Katelyn Whiting hit a towering fly ball to left field.Â
Â
Trailblazer left fielder
LB Kahahawai-Kekona ran back on ball and made a home run saving catch at the top of the fence for the second out, but the ball was hit deep enough to plate the tying run.
Â
In the UT seventh, the Trailblazers quickly loaded the bases with three-straight lead off singles. Then with one out in the frame,
Lauren Almeida lined a shot to left center that dropped safely in front of a Wildcat outfielder to drive in the winning run and end the game.Â
Â
Eldredge and Campbell each recorded three hits and an RBI to lead Blazers, who peppered the Wildcats for 15 total hits.Â
Â
Utah Tech will again host another tournament next weekend as is welcomes BYU, Utah Valley, UNLV, Oregon State, Idaho State and Portland State to town for the annual Trailblazer Classic. The tourney will be played over five days starting on Thursday, March 2.Â
