Utah Tech softball wrapped up its appearance at the San Diego Torero Classic with a Saturday split of two games played at the at USD Softball Diamond. The Trailblazers dropped a 7-5 decision to Boise State in their first game of the day, but rebounded with a 6-4 victory over the host Toreros in their final game.
In game one, the Trailblazers (5-5) erased an early 2-0 deficit with one swing of the bat when
Oaklee Trapp connected for a three-run home run in the home second inning.
Lauren Almeida doubled to lead off the frame, then after a
Hannah Hughbanks single, Trapp hammered a Taylor Caudill offering over the right center field fence.
Utah Tech extended its lead to 4-2 with an unearned run in the third, but the Broncos countered with five runs in the fifth to wrestle the lead back at 7-4.
The Blazers got one of those runs back in the sixth on a
Laura Lockard RBI flyout and had a chance to tie or walk off with the win with two on and two outs in the seventh. However Boise State (6-4) would retire Trapp for the final out to end the game.
Utah Tech finished with nine hits in the loss, with Almeida, Hughbanks and Trapp collecting two hits apiece.
In the nightcap against the host Toreros, Utah Tech scored all six of its runs in the second inning to race out to a commanding lead. The Blazers sent 10 batters to the plate and pounded out six hits, starting with consecutive singles from Hughbanks and Trapp to lead off the frame.
Lockard would chase both base runners home with a double to right center, which was followed by back-to-back RBI singles from
Brylee Rudd and
Tanya Windle. Then with two outs in the frame, Almeida capped the rally with a two-run single to center.
USD (1-9) rallied with two runs in the home second, then took advantage of a costly Blazer error in the third to plate two more runs and trim the deficit to 6-4.
However that would it for San Diego as freshman hurler
Sauren Garton (W, 3-1) retired 13 of the final 14 Toreros she faced to close out the road victory.
The Trailblazers pounded out 11 hits on the night, their highest total over the five games played on the weekend, with Windle and
Shea Clements leading the way with two safeties apiece.
Garton struck out five and scattered two earned runs (four total) and eight hits over seven innings complete to earn her third win of the season.
Utah Tech will open its 2023 home slate as hosts of its own tournament next weekend at Karl Brooks Field. UT will open play on Friday morning vs. Saint Louis at 11 a.m.
