Utah Tech softball set to play at the Torero Classic in San Diego

THIS WEEK:
Utah Tech will continue their season in San Diego in the San Diego Tournament. UT will take on Bosie State twice and and play play single match ups against Wichita State, Fairleigh Dickinson, and San Diego over the course of three days. The first pitch will be thrown on Feb. 16 at 6:30 p.m. (MT) against Bosie State.


RUNNING BACK LAST WEEK:
Utah Tech opened their season at the Hawaii tournament going 3-2 in games against Hawaii and Saint Mary's. The Trailblazers split their two games with St. Mary's winning their opening game of the tournament with an 8-0 win over the Gaels they falling 6-3 in the second match-up. Against Hawaii the Trailblazers went 2-1. In the first match up the Rainbow Warriors downed UT 2-1 before the Trailblazers bounced back beating Hawaii 12-3 in five innings then 2-1 in their final matchup of the tournament.


ROOT ROOT FOR THE HOME TEAM:
Utah Tech is 288-81 overall at home.
The Trailblazers are 245-67 at home under head coach Randy Simkins.
UT is yet to play at home in the 2023 season


ON THE ROAD AGAIN:
Utah Tech is 177-103 overall on the road.
The Trailblazers are 155-82 on the road under head coach Randy Simkins.
During the 2023 season, UT is 3-2 away from Karl Brooks field.


RECORDS AND STANDINGS:
The Trailblazers enter the weekend with a 3-2 overall record

Coming into 2023, UT was picked No. 8 in the WAC Preseason Coaches Polls and had Hannah Hughbanks along with Shea Clements selected to the WAC Preseason All-Conference team.


AT THE PLATE:
The Trailblazers are hitting .264 with a .368 slugging percentage. The team has racked up 33 hits with eight doubles, a triple, and a home run.


IN THE CIRCLE:
Trailblazers pitchers have a stellar 2.65 ERA good for fifth in the WAC. Opponents are hitting .240 with 30 hits and two home runs. Utah Tech pitchers have combine for one shutout.


LEADING THE WAY:
Early in the season the Trailblazers are led by Tanya Windle who is hitting .438 with 7 hits that include a pair of doubles and a triple. Windel also leads the team with six RBIs. In the power category Lauren Almeida is the star with a slugging percentage of .750 and the Trailblazers lone home run.


Over in the circle the Trailblazers early ace is Sauren Graton. She has pitched two games completing both of them with one shutout. She has a minuscule 0.51 ERA (good for fifth in the WAC) while holding batters to just a .160 batting average across 13.2 innings.


CONSISTENT SPOT:
Last season Utah Tech had two Blazers filling consistent starting spots in all 51 games of the line up. Laura Lockard locked down third base while sophomore Lauren Almeida started at shortstop in every game. Kasey Crawford made appearances in all 51 games and Shea Clements started in 50. All four of them return for the 2023 season.


BLAZERS RAKE IN POST SEASON AWARDS:
Utah Tech placed three Trailblazers in the WAC post season awards. Hannah Hughbanks and Shea Clements were both named to the First Team while Carly Eldredge was named to the second team.


HUGHBANKS' EARNS WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR:
Not only was Hannah Hughbanks named to the All-WAC first team but she was also named to the Defensive Team and was named Defensive Player of the Year. She ended the season with a .993 fielding percentage, helped the Trailblazers to a league high of 17 double plays, and was sixth in the conference in putouts (288) as well as total chances (302).


HUGHBANKS' HITTING THE GAP:
Senior Hannah Hughbanks has recorded 43 doubles in her career. In the 2022 season she recorded 17 to push her to the No. 4 spot on the teams all-time doubles list.


All Time vs Bosie State: This years tournament will be the first time the Trailblazers have taken on Bosie State.
Know Your Foe: Bosie State comes into the tournament with a 1-4 record after playing in the UCF Black and Gold Tournament last weekend. Early in the season they are led by Seren Huchingson who is hitting .462 with six hits including a double and a home run. In the circle the Broncos have a team ERA of 14.59 led by Lindse Walljasper with three starts and a 12.10 ERA


All Time vs Wichita State: This years tournament will be the first time the Trailblazers have taken on Witchita State.
Know Your Foe: Witchita State comes into the tournament with a 4-1 record after playing in the Texas State tournament last weekend. Early in the season they are led by Sydney McKinney who is hitting .778 with 14 hits including three doubles. In the circle the Shockers have a 1.53 ERA led by Alison Cooper with two starts and a 1.00 ERA


All Time vs Fairleigh Dickinson: This years tournament will be the first time the Trailblazers have taken on Fairleigh Dickinson.


Know Your Foe: Fairleigh Dickinson comes into the tournament with a 3-2 record after playing in the Frank Griggin classic. Early in the season they are led by Cassidy Triska who is hitting .333 with five hits. In the circle the Knights have a 2.41 ERA led by Alayna Savaglio with two starts and a 1.11 ERA


All Time vs San Diego: The Trailblazers has taken on San Diego one time. The game was last season in the Cal State Fullerton Tournament where the Toreros beat the Trailblazers 7-3.


Know Your Foe: San Diego comes into the tournament with a 0-5 record after playing in the Stacy Winsberg tournament last weekend. Early in the season they are led by Izzy Owen who is hitting .438 with seven hits. In the circle the Toreros have an 11.85 ERA and are led by Kelsey Tadlock with two starts and a 4.08 ERA
