Utah Tech came away with its second split in as many days on day two of the Trailblazers' season-opening trip to Hawai'i on Saturday.
Â
The Blazers opened the day on the wrong end of a 6-3 decision to Saint Mary's, but bounced back in a big way with a 12-3 triumph in five innings over host Hawai'i in the nightcap.
Â
Utah Tech (2-2), which blanked Saint Mary's in an 8-0 three-hitter on Friday, fell behind 3-0 to the Gaels in the first inning of Saturday's rematch. SMC (1-2) pounded out four hits in the frame and took advantage of two Blazer errors.
Â
Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the third, the Trailblazers got on the board thanks to a two-out Gael error. SMC managed to make up for the miscue by plating two runs in the fourth to extend to a 6-1 lead.
Â
The Trailblazers answered in the home half of the stanza with a two-out, two-run single from
LB Kahahawai-Kekona to again make it a three-run game. Unfortunately that would be as close as Utah Tech would get as the Blazers were held to just two hits and four total baserunners over the final three innings.
Â
UT finished with six hits in the game, with Kahahawai-Kekona accounting for two of those safeties and both RBI.
Utah Tech quickly shook off that loss in a big way against the host Rainbow Wahine, striking for eight first-inning runs to bolt out to a commanding lead. The Trailblazers pounded out six hits and sent 11 batters to the plate in the frame, with five different batters driving in runs in the rally.
UT tacked on three more runs third and another in the fifth. Meanwhile Hawai'i broke through with two runs in the home third, then added another in the fifth and had two runners on base with a chance to extend the game.Â
However that would be all the Rainbow Wahine would get as Blazer hurler
Attlyn Johnston (W, 1-1) induced a pop up on the infield to end the game.
The Trailblazers finished with 11 hits in the nightcap, with lead-off hitter
Tanya Windle coming within a home run of hitting for the cycle as she went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored.
Â
Hannah Hughbanks and
Lauren Almeida also two hits apiece, while eight different Blazer hitters drove in at least one run in the win. Johnston struck out one and scattered three runs and seven hits over five innings to collect her first decision of the year.Â
Â
Utah Tech will close out its Hawai'i trip with a Sunday date against the host Rainbow Wahine at 1 p.m. (MT).Â
