Trailblazers Rout Bethesda on Saturday, 110-35

Two NCAA-era program records fall during an overall balanced day for the Blazers

Utah Tech broke two NCAA-era program records, and stopped a two-game slide, in a 110-35 rout of Bethesda University on Saturday afternoon inside the Burns Arena.

How it happened
All five Trailblazer starters wasted little time getting into the scoring column as Utah Tech (6-4/1-1 WAC) jumped out to a quick 17-8 advantage just four minutes into play.

Bethesda (0-11) managed to stay within striking distance, hitting on its first three 3-point shots, the last of which trimmed the Utah Tech lead to 17-11 at the 5:35 mark of the opening frame.

Utah Tech would push its lead to double digits at 23-11 when Breaunna Gillen and Maddie Warren both converted on conventional three-point plays. Warren, who scored 11 first-quarter points, would go on to collect her second "And One" just before the quarter horn to stake Utah Tech to a 26-15 advantage after the first 10 minutes.

Utah Tech quickly broke the game open with a 14-0 run to begin the second period and would outscore the Lion Angels 27-7 in the stanza to take a commanding 53-22 lead into the halftime break.

The Trailblazers went on to outscore Bethesda 26-6 in the third quarter, and 31-7 in the fourth, to cruise to the easy home victory.

Numbers to know
Utah Tech's 75-point margin of victory broke a school record that stood for nearly 15 years. During the 2008-09 season, the Trailblazers rang in the New Year with a 95-36 (+59) home win over Chaminade (1/3/09).

The Blazers also set another school record by holding Bethesda to just 16.5 percent (13-of-79) from the floor. The new shooting percentage standard broke the previous record set during the 2021-22 campaign when Utah Tech limited Antelope Valley to a 19.0 percent shooting effort (11/20/21).

Utah Tech's 110 points were the second-most in a game this season and the third-most in the program's four-year era. Meanwhile, the 35 points allowed were the third-fewest surrendered during the team's NCAA era.

Calyn Dallas enjoyed a banner day as she recorded her first collegiate double-double with career-highs of 22 points and 15 rebounds. The freshman, who went 10-of-19 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers, nearly messed around and got a triple-double as she finished with a career-best six assists to go along with two blocks and one steal in her second start of the season.

Gillen added 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc, and tallied eight rebounds and four assists. For Gillen, it was her 22nd 20-plus point outing of her career, and marked the 67thtime overall the fifth-year guard had scored in double figures.

Maddie Warren finished with 20 points on 7-of-15 from the floor with two 3-pointers. Warren also collected three boards and picked off three steals.

Macie Warren chipped in 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting with a pair of treys, and managed to fill the stat sheet to the tune of six rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Meanwhile the Trailblazer bench outscored the Bethesda reserves by a 31-6 count, led by Alyson Deaver, who poured in a career-high 14 points in 22 minutes. Deaver also grabbed eight rebounds and finished with two assists, one steal and one block.

Caitlyn Jordan just missed her first collegiate double-double as she wound up with career-highs of nine points and 10 boards.

All eight Trailblazers who played on Saturday scored and recorded at least three rebounds. In addition, seven of the eight also had at least two assists and one steal in an overall balanced day up-and-down the Utah Tech line-up.

Utah Tech shot 54.4 percent from the floor (43-of-79), which included a 10-of-35 (.286) clip from the perimeter. The 43 made field goals on Saturday were the third-most in a single game in the program's NCAA era. The Blazers also recorded 23 assists on those 43 made baskets.

The Blazers pulled down a season-high 64 rebounds (t-third all-time at UT) and recorded a season-high plus-27 rebounding margin (64-37).

Utah Tech also posted season highs in both steals (13) and blocks (10). In fact, the last time the Trailblazer defense recorded 10 blocks in a game was during the 2010-11 season (10 vs. Academy of Art; 2/12/11).

Alex Buckley was the lone Lion Angel to score in double figures with 15 points.

Utah Tech will wrap up its five-game, pre-Christmas homestand as hosts of the program's first NCAA Division-I multi-team event (MTE) - the inaugural Utah Tech Trailblazer Classic - this upcoming Tuesday-through-Thursday, Dec. 19-21, inside the Burns Arena.

The Trailblazers will play two Power-5 opponents over the first two days of the Classic, beginning with a match-up against PAC-12 power Oregon on Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. Utah Tech will turn right back around on Wednesday to face Big-12 member Oklahoma State on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m.

The Classic will then wrap up on Thursday with Oregon and Oklahoma State squaring off at 2 p.m.
