Men’s Soccer Falls in WAC Tournament Semifinal

Trailblazers finish 2023 season 9-9 with a postseason victory.

(Las Vegas, Nev. – Nov. 8, 2023) Utah Tech men's soccer played Wednesday night, falling 2-0 to the second-seeded California Baptist Lancers in the semifinal round of the 2023 WAC Men's Soccer Tournament. With the result, UT officially concludes its 2023 campaign 9-9 after winning in its first WAC Tournament appearance on Sunday.

Starting the same eleven who defeated San Jose State on Sunday, it would be the visitors who opened things early, scoring a pair of goals in the 13th and 17th minutes before Utah Tech was able to find a shooting opportunity. Jimi Villasenor and Damian Arguello had shot attempts blocked in the 21st and 23rd minutes before Villasnor forced a save in the 23rd. Though Arguello forced another CBU save late in the first half, the Lancers led 2-0 at the break.

Villasneor would force another California Baptist in the 53rd minute as Utah Tech out-shot California Baptist 9-2 in the second period of play but to no avail, falling 2-0.

Led by Villasenior's seven, Utah Tech would finish the game with a 16-7 advantage in shots, though CBU one more on target than the Trailblazers, leading 5-4 in shots on goal. Both teams took four corner kicks while Utah Tech finished with just 11 fouls committed while drawing 16.

17 different players featured in Wednesday's game as Short finished with three saves; he along with Anthony Godinez, Julian Herrera and Angel Saldana played the full 90 minutes.

The loss ends Utah Tech's 2023 season, one that used a stout defense and several gritty performances to set a program-record for wins at the Division-I level. Picked dead last in the preseason coaches poll, defeating San Jose State 1-0 in the quarterfinal after entering the tournament ranked third.
