Utah Tech closes out regular season at Seattle & UVU

TRAILBLAZERS DROP PAIR OF WAC MATCHES: Utah Tech fell in four sets on Senior Night against UTRGV last Thursday before falling in five sets on the road at Southern Utah on Monday.

Kennedi Knudsen led the Blazers with 12 kills against the Vaqueros and Hannah Howard went for a season-high 19 kills against the Thunderbirds.

WAC STANDINGS: The Trailblazers enter the final week of the regular season in ninth place in the WAC trailing a three-way tie for sixth between Tarleton State, Abilene Christian and Utah Valley by two matches as all three teams sit 6-8 in WAC contests.

The WAC Volleyball Tournament is set for Nov. 16-18 hosted by Utah Valley at Lockhart Arena with the top eight teams in the final regular season standings qualifying for the tournament.

BULLDOGS IN NON-CONFERENCE ACTION: The Trailblazers posted a 4-6 mark in non-conference action with wins over Manhattan, CSU Bakersfield, New Mexico & Idaho while falling in five-set battles to Weber State, Fresno State and Marshall. Competing in three tournaments, the Blazers had three players earn All-Tournament honors in Emma Ricks (Weber State Invite), Sydney Reese (New Mexico Lobo Invite & UT Invite) & Taela Laufiso (Weber State, New Mexico Lobo Invite & UT Invite).

WAC RANKINGS: The Blazers enter the week ranking fourth in opposing hitting percentage (.190), fifth in service aces per set (1.42) & service aces (136), fifth in blocks per set (2.11) & blocks (202.5) and seventh in kills (1,131) & kills per set (11.78).

Sophomore Kennedi Knudsen is among the WAC leaders in kills per set sitting seventh at 3.01 and senior Emma Ricks is tied for seventh in digs (315).

HARDY CLIMBING CAREER RANKS: Senior middle blocker Kate Hardy continues to climb the career ranks in three blocking categories sitting third in solo blocks (54), fourth in total blocks (270) and sixth in block assists (216). The Idaho native is also second all-time in career hitting percentage (.294).

LAUFISO FINISHING CAREER IN TOP TEN: Senior setter Taela Laufiso will finish her Utah Tech career in the top 10 in both assists (5th - 1,543) & assists per set (6th - 6.77).

UTAH TECH SERIES vs. REDHAWKS: The Blazers lead the all-time series over Seattle, 5-1 with five straight wins over the Redhawks. Utah Tech swept the Redhawks at home on Oct. 14 and are 2-1 on the road against SU with victories in both the spring and fall of 2021.

UTAH TECH SERIES vs. WOLVERINES: The Trailblazers trail the all-time series against Utah Valley, 0-8 with the Wolverines winning in four sets earlier this season in St. George on Oct. 12. UT is 0-3 all-time on the road against the Wolverines with losses in 2006, 2021 & 2022.

A LOOK AT SEATTLE: Seattle is 7-18 overall on the season and 2-12 in the WAC sitting in a tie for 10th in the conference with Southern Utah. The Redhawks are 1-5 at home this season with a five-set win at home over Abilene Christian on Oct. 28.

As a team, Seattle is fifth in the WAC in blocks per set (1.97), sixth in total blocks (179.0) and seventh in team attacks per set (33.96) and total team attacks (3,090).

Individually, junior outside hitter Arianna Bilby leads the WAC in attacks per set (11.01), ranks third in kills per set (3.49) and is fourth in kills (318).

A LOOK AT UTAH VALLEY: Utah Valley is 9-16 on the season with a 6-8 record in the WAC sitting in a three-way tie for sixth with Abilene Christian and Tarleton State.

The Wolverines are 4-7 at home this season and rank first in the WAC and eighth in the nation in blocks per set (2.79). UVU is also second in total blocks (256.5), sixth in opponent hitting percentage (.222), seventh in assists per set (10.79), kills per set (11.61), service aces per set (1.35), assists (993) and kills (1,068).

Individually, senior middle blocker Caleigh Vagana leads the WAC in blocks per set (1.39) and is second in blocks (106). Sophomore outside hitter Avery Shewell checks in third in the WAC in points per set (4.00) and is sixth in kills per set (3.23).

UP NEXT: Utah Tech will look to qualify for the WAC Volleyball Tournament next week with a pair of victories this weekend.
