Maggie McCord drilled six 3-pointers and led all scorers with 20 points as Utah Tech swept its two-game Thanksgiving weekend trip to New England on the strength of an 81-58 victory at Stonehill College on Saturday afternoon at Merkert Gymnasium in Easton, Mass.
How it happened
Utah Tech (4-2) led wire-to-wire and set the tone early, outscoring the Skyhawks 16-6 to open the game. The Trailblazers knocked down seven of their first 10 shots and forced three Stonehill College turnovers through the opening five minutes.
Stonehill (0-7) would cut the deficit in half with five-straight points, but freshman forward
Caitlynn Jordan answered with seven-straight points, while McCord hit her second trey of the period as part of a 10-4 spurt that pushed the Blazer lead to 26-15 after one quarter.
The Trailblazers kept the momentum rolling to begin the second quarter, scoring eight-unanswered points in an 11-2 run to open up a 20-point lead at 37-17 after McCord's third trifecta of the game.
Stonehill clapped back with seven-straight points with just over three minutes to play in the half, but again a Blazer freshman would quell any chance of a Skyhawk rally.
This time it was
Calyn Dallas, who knocked down consecutive 3-pointers in a span of 37 seconds, as Utah Tech went into the halftime break with a 47-28 cushion.
The Skyhawks mounted one more charge in the third quarter, opening the frame with a 11-5 run to again pull to within 13 at 52-39 with 4:28 left in the period.
As Jordan and Dallas did in the first half, McCord extinguished the Stonehill rally with back-to-back 3-pointers.
Macie Warren then followed with one of her own, as Utah Tech led by 20 at the end of three and would cruise through the final quarter to close out the road win.
Numbers to know
McCord enjoyed arguably her best shooting performance of her career as she went 7-of-10 from the floor, 6-of-9 from beyond the arc, en route to her season-high 20 points. McCord also pulled down a co-game high eight rebounds and dished out two assists.
Dallas also had the hot hand as she knocked down a career-best four 3-pointers on her way to a career-high 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
After seeing her consecutive games played streak end at 73 in Wednesday's win at New Hampshire,
Breaunna Gillen returned to the starting line-up on Saturday and picked up right where she left off. The fifth-year guard, who was injured early in last Monday's loss at Texas A&M-Commerce, filled the stat sheet with 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds in 32 minutes of action.
Meanwhile
Macie Warren scored in double figures for the fifth time in six games as she poured in 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting with a pair of treys. Warren also collected five assists, two boards and two steals.
Utah Tech shot 32-of-70 (.457) from the floor, which included a 13-of-36 clip (.361) from 3-point country. The Trailblazers outrebounded Stonehill 45-37 and tallied 22 assists on their 32 made field goals.
The Blazers also scored 21 points off of 19 Skyhawk turnovers, with 14 of those points coming in the first half, and finished with eight steals on the afternoon.
Anna Boruta led two Skyhawks in double figures with 14 points. Stonehill shot 34.9 percent (22-of-63) from floor, 6-of-23 (.261) from the perimeter.
Utah Tech will wrap up its five-game road swing, and begin its fourth season of Western Athletic Conference play next Saturday when the Blazers head up Interstate 15 for an "Old Hammer Rivalry" showdown at Utah Valley. Tip-off inside the UCCU Center in Orem is set for 2 p.m. (MST).
