Utah Tech Falls to San Jose State

Trailblazers face UNLV and Air Force next weekend.

(St. George, Utah – Oct. 8, 2023) Utah Tech men's soccer played Sunday afternoon, falling 3-0 to the San Jose State Spartans. With the result, UT moves to 6-5 on the year with five games remaining in the regular season.

Bladimir Cuevas made his first start as a Trailblazer as the visitors forced Stockton Short into action early, with the Utah Tech goalkeeper making a save three minutes into the contest. Despite the early stop, SJSU found a breakthrough in the 25th minute to take a 1-0 lead and quickly found another in the 33rd to take a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

UT looked close to cutting into the lead in the 66th minute after high pressure created a one-on-one opportunity for Damian Arguello, but the Spartan goalkeeper made a big save to preserve that 2-0 lead. Though the Trailblazer offense created several more opportunities down the stretch, the visitors would find a third with 26 seconds remaining to claim the 3-0 victory.

Abigay Gomez led all players with four shots across 82 minutes of action as Utah Tech out-shot San Jose State 17-5 in the game. Short would finish with two saves across 90 minutes of action; he along with Julian Herrera and Angel Saldana played the full 90 minutes while Gavin Coe played 28 minutes off the bench in his first appearance of the season.

Utah Tech returns to action on the road next week, facing UNLV on Thursday before hosting Air Force on Sunday.
