Utah Tech volleyball succumbed to a four set loss to Southern Utah Saturday afternoon.
How it happened: Utah Tech started the first set off on a 7-2 run. The Trailblazers never gave up the lead and pushed on for a 21-12 lead before capturing a 25-20 first set victory.
Southern Utah started the second set with three consecutive points. That momentum didn't last long as Utah Tech answered with a 9-0 run. SUU made a surge to bring tie the score up at 22-22. The set remained tied at 24-24 with tensions running high Southern Utah came up with back-to-back kills to take the 26-24 second set win.
The third set started out neck and neck for the two teams going into a 7-7 score. Southern Utah picked up momentum and pushed out for a 16-13 lead. A kill by Kate Hardy sparked a 4-1 run so the Trailblazers could take the lead. The Trailblazers lost all momentum after that and SUU pushed on for a 25-22 set three win.
The two teams matched either point for point in the fourth set. Southern Utah edged past for a 25-23 fourth set win.
Killin' It: Nihipali led UT with 12 kills.
Kate Hardy also posted double digit kills with 11. Hardy ended the night with the team high of .348 hitting percentage. Utah Tech ended the night with 52 total kills from 166 attacks with 29 errors for a .139 percentage.
Taela Laufsio had 24 assists to add to the Trailblazers offensive efforts while Lauren Mena recorded 14 assists.
Diggin' it: Mykenna Nelson led UT in digs with 23 in the match.
Emma Ricks added 12 digs for UT while
Chayse Daugherty recorded 10. In total Utah Tech had 65 digs. Nelson has recorded double digit digs in every match so far this season.
Notes to know: Utah Tech is now 6-5 overall on the season.
