Utah Tech volleyball started the home season off with a clean three set sweep over Cal State Fullerton Friday evening.
What Head Coach Camilla Hafoka said: First home game of the season, thank you to the student section for showing up! We served well tonight to put some pressure on Fullerton. They tested us in some moments but I'm really glad our girls were able to stay calm and collected throughout the entire match.
How it happened: Utah Tech started the match off strong by jumping out to a 9-3 lead thanks to a 5-0 run.
Chayse Daugherty had back-to-back kills to start things off and then
Kate Hardy had back-to-back service aces. Fullerton pushed back and brought the score within two but Utah Tech charged ahead to take a 14-8 lead. The Titans kept the pressure on never letting the Trailblazers take more than a four point lead.
In the final points of the first set, UT had a 20-18 lead. Daugherty stepped back to serve
and served four consecutive balls to help the Trailblazers end the first set with a 25-18 win.
The second set started off with both teams matching each other point for point. A kill by Isabelle Iosua sparked a 4-0 run to give Utah Tech a 10-6 lead. Fullerton applied some pressure pushing back to tie the set up 12-12. The two teams kept leap frogging on the scoreboard until the final points of the set. Trailing by one, Utah Tech's Hannah Howard slammed down a kill to tie things up 20-20. The next point went to the Trailblazers thanks to a big block by Howard and Kate Hardy. UT was picking up momentum in the home stretch and finished out the set with a 25-22.
Utah Tech dominated the majority of the third set. First, the Trailblazers jumped out to a 13-2 lead UT never let up and later pushed for a 20-6 lead. A kill by Daugherty put Utah Tech at set point and she hammered the nail for another kill to end the set with a 25-13 win and the clean sweep of Fullerton.
Killin' It: Daugherty led the Trailblazers with 14 kills from 33 attacks with just two errors for a .333 percentage. Howard also had double digit kills with 11 from 30 attacks and ended with a .230 percentage. Hardy also put up impressive offensive numbers with six kills from 14 attacks with no errors for a .433 percentage on the night.
Taela Laufiso had 35 assists on the night just one shy of tying her career high.
In total, Utah Tech ended the match with 43 kills from 113 attacks with 11 errors for a .233 percentage on the game, the best of the season thus far.
Diggin' it: Utah Tech had three Trailblazers with double digit digs.
Mykenna Nelson led with 17 digs while
Emma Ricks added 12 and Daugherty had 10.
In total the Trailblazers had 61 digs.
Blockin' it: Hardy led UT with four blocks and recorded the lone solo. Utah Tech recorded six total blocks.
Notes to know: Utah Tech is now 3-1 overall on the season.
Next Up: The Trailblazers will head to Berkeley, Calif to take on California, Nevada and Tennessee State Sept. 9-11 before returning home to host Idaho State on Sept. 16 and UNLV on Sept. 17.
