Thrilling game ends in heartbreaking loss

After a 21 minute mid-game delay and an intense triple overtime, Dixie State women's basketball fell narrowly 84-82 to New Mexico State Saturday night. 

How it happened:  Macie Warren started things off hot with a made three ball within the first 15 seconds. The two teams stayed close in scoring both looking for a steady groove. With three minutes left in the quarter, DSU trailed 14-10 and then went on an 8-3 run to take an 18-17 lead at the end of the first quarter. 

The Trailblazers lagged in the second quarter going a five minute scoring drought. Dixie trailed by 12 points at one point and ended the half on a 7-0 run to trail 36-32 at the half. 

Dixie State came out of the break popping off on a 7-2 run to take back the lead. The game remained close throughout the third quarter with DSU trailing 50-49 at the end of the third quarter. 

During the third quarter break, the fire alarm went off and the building had to be evacuated. After a 21 minute delay, game action resumed. WIth four minutes left in the game, DSU jumped to a six point lead and after three minutes NMSU tied it up with one minute to go at 61-61. 

Emily Isaacson had the chance to end the game in regulation with a wide open three from the top of the arc it ricocheted around the rim before popping out with just one second left and the game went into overtime. 

NMSU was the first to breakaway from the tied score in OT but Breaunna Gillen took it to the hoop from the baseline and drew the foul for a three point play and to give DSU the lead. After a big defensive stop, Shanaijah Davison sunk a pair of free throws to put Dixie up by three with just under two minutes remaining in the first overtime. NMSU sunk a three to tie it up and send the game into a second overtime. 

The battle didn't end after five more minutes of game action as the game was still tied with a 75-75 score going into a third overtime. 

With two minutes remaining in the third overtime, DSU trailed by five points. Gillen went coast-to-coast for two points to bring it back within three. DSU got a stop and gained possession with 35 seconds left. 

Leaders: Dixie State was led by Gillen who had 21 points and six assists. Davison had 19 points for DSU's offensive efforts while Warren tied her career high with 18. Gillen and Warren tied for the game high with eight boards each. 

Comparison: Dixie State ended the game shooting 44 percent from the field, 35 percent from the three and 50 percent from the free throw line. The Trailblazers totaled 39 rebounds, 15 assists and 29 turnovers. 

NMSU shot 36 percent from the field, 29 percent from the three and 5 3 percent from the free throw line. The Aggies ended the game with 49 rebounds, 14 assists, and 19n turnovers.

Notes to Know: DSU is now 7-15 overall on the season and sit at 3-8 in WAC play. 

Up next: Dixie State will stay on the road to take on Grand Canyon before returning to the Burns for a rematch with NMSU on Thursday, Feb. 17.
