Trailblazers Slug Past Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, 66-60

Five Trailblazers scored in double figures as Utah Tech salvaged a Thanksgiving weekend split of two games in North Dakota with a 66-60 neutral court victory over Cal State Fullerton on Saturday afternoon at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.

How it happened
The game was a back-and-forth battle that featured 24 ties and 20 lead changes, with neither side owning more than a seven-point lead.

The Trailblazers (3-4/0-0 WAC) led for most of the first half, but could not put some distance themselves and the Titans (4-2), who took their first lead of the day with just under eight minutes to play and held a 33-29 advantage at the intermission.

Utah Tech wrestled the lead back after two Trey Edmonds free throws made it a 42-41 game with 14:28 remaining.

Trailing 60-58 with three minutes to go, Tanner Christensen got free down low for a lay-in to draw UT even.

Isaiah Pope then knocked down jumper at the 2:03 mark, while he and Dancell Leter both hit clutch free throws in the closing moments to provide the final margin.

Utah Tech's defense held CSUF scoreless over the final four minutes as the Titans missed their final six shot attempts with one turnover.

Numbers to know
Christensen led the Blazers' balanced scoring attack with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting. The sophomore forward also dished out four assists and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds en route to his first double-double of the season.

Pope added 12 points to go with three boards, two steals and one block, while Jacob Nicolds was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor with a 3-pointer to finish with a season-high 11 points.

Leter, who also celebrated his birthday on Saturday, tallied 11 points and grabbed five rebounds off the bench, and Cameron Gooden chipped in 10 points.

After shooting a season-low 35.1 percent in Friday's loss to North Dakota, Utah Tech shot a season-high 52.3 percent (23-of-44) on Saturday, including a 61.9 clip (13-of-21) in the second half.

UT also connected on a season-best 42.1 percent (8-of-19) of its perimeter jumpers, but struggled at the foul line for the second-straight game, going just 12-of-21 (.571) at the stripe.

Utah Tech outrebounded Cal State Fullerton by a 30-20 count.

Latrell Wrightsell Jr. led three Titans in double figures with a game-high 21 points.

CSUF shot 47.2 percent (25-of-53) for the game, including a 35.0 percent effort (7-of-20) from beyond the arc. The Titans also went to the line just four times (3-of-4; .750) on the day.

Up next
Utah Tech continues its seven-game road odyssey next Thursday, Dec. 1, with its first-ever trip to Logan to play at in-state foe Utah State. Tip-off inside the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum is scheduled for 7 p.m.
