Trailblazers women soccer came with a literal last minute victory over Southern Utah Thursday afternoon with a final score of 2-1.
WHAT HEAD COACH MOLLY ROUSE SAID: "Today was excellent to see the team respond to the challenges of match. SUU created solid chances and it was positive seeing our group weather that storm. We are excited for the opportunities we were able to generate, with several special performances from multiple players on the team. Ultimately, today was a great example of remaining opportunistic and capitalizing at the right time. We are looking forward to another chance to showcase our growth against NAU on Sunday."
HOW IT HAPPENED: Dixie State started the game off with a strong offensive attack with four shots, two on goal in the first 15 minutes of action.
The momentum stayed in favor of Dixie State as the game progressed and in the 37th minute Kearney Hoggan dished the ball to Brynlee Roberts who took a shot from the right side in the 18 yard box that bent in and snuck around the keeper to give the Trailblazers a 1-0 lead. A lead DSU maintained going into the half.
In the second half the Thunderbirds were able to get a goal in the 79th minute to tie the game.
With time winding down and the intensity building up, Dixie State hit the offensive attack hard with Roberts finding herself on several fast breaks. However in the final minute, Dixie State had the numbers and Jill Bennett sent the ball to Roberts who was able to sneak in a goal with just 43 seconds left in the game for the game winner.
With a final score of 2-1, the game finished with a Dixie State win.
STAT BREAKDOWN: Roberts lead the Blazers with six shots and three on frame and two goals. Hoggan had three shots with two on frame. Bennett and Hoggan each had one assist to add to the DSU offensive momentum.
Kayla Gonzales was in the net for the Trailblazers and played 90 minutes. She came away with four saves and allowed one goal in the full 90 minutes.
Dixie State ended the game with 18 total shots and five on goal while Southern Utah ended with 18 total shots and five on goal.
NOTES TO KNOW: Dixie State is now 4-5-0 overall on the season. This is the third game this season where the Trailblazers have scored a game winning goal in the final 10 minutes of play.
UP NEXT: The Trailblazers will return to Greater Zion Stadium for the final preseason game of the season hosting Northern Arizona before they start WAC action first hosting New Mexico State and then Grand Canyon.
