WSOC to take on SUU and NAU

ON THE WHISTLE: Dixie State will continue the 2021 season with the a road game against in-state rival Southern Utah on Thursday, Sept. 16 before hosting Northern Arizona Sunday, Sept. 19.

NOTES TO KNOW:
• Dixie State holds a 3-5-0 record on the season.
• Dixie State has played just one home game this year. The Blazers started the season with six consecutive road games.

DIXIE STATE STAT QUICK NOTES:
• Dixie State has 9 goals on the season from 72 shots with 36 shots on frame.
• DSU averages nine shots per game.
• The Trailblazers have 56 saves on the season and have allowed 17 goals on the season.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL
• Dixie State's freshman Kalea Woodyatt scored her first collegiate goal and first Trailblazer goal of the season just eight minutes into the first game of the season.  
• Reshirt senior, Whitley Griffiths leads Dixie State with three goals on the season including two game winners.
• In the first six games, the Trailblazers scored eight goals. Of those goals, four, were scored in the first 10 minutes of a game, while five of the eight were scored within the first 10 minutes of any half.
• DSU has scored two game winning goals in the final 10 minutes of the game.

COOK'S STANDOUT PERFORMANCE
Senior Kelsey Cook had a stellar performance against North Dakota State. She scored the first goal in the 3-0 shutout against the Bison. Her goal was unassisted but then went on to claim two assists for the final two goals.

GRIFFITHS EARNED PRE-SEASON ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS
Whitley Griffiths was named to the WAC Pre-Season All-Conference team after leading Dixie State with 10 goals last season.

FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON
Dixie State picked up a 2-1 win over UNLV in the season opener. DSU put a notch on the scoreboard in the first eight minutes from a corner kick. UNLV answered before the first half closed for a 1-1 score. It wasn't until the 88th minute that the Blazers were able to tuck in another goal for the game winner.

COACHING STAFF: Molly Rouse (Minnesota, 2012) is in her second season as Dixie State head coach. Rouse hnow has a 3-10-2 record as a head coach. Rouse brought back with her assistant coaches Lindsey Dare and Jennie Clark.

SEASON KICKOFFS: Dixie State has an 9-4-3 record in season openers in the NCAA era. They are also 4-2-3 in home openers.

BENNETT TAKES OVER MOST MATCHES PLAYED: Senior Jill Bennett has now competed in 81 matches in her time at Dixie State which is more matches than any other athlete in school history.

2021 ROSTER BREAKDOWN: Dixie State returned nearly eight starters and lost two from last years squad.

The Trailblazers return their leading scorer from last spring in Whitley Griffiths who had 10 goals and one assist. Also returning are seniors, Jill Bennett, Kelsey Cook, Tess Donaldson, junior Shaylyn Uyeshiro and sophomore McKinley Barney who all clocked over 1,000 minutes played last season.

The Trailblazers had six players earn All-Conference in the spring of 2021 with five of them returning in Griffiths (First Team), Donaldson (Second team) and Bennet, Cook and Barney (Honorable Mentions). Dixie State ended the 2021 spring season with 19 total goals.

ALL-TIME VS. SOUTHERN UTAH: Dixie State has a 0-1-0 overall record in the all-time opponent series with Southern Utah. Dixie is on a one game tied streak with SUU in the series. Dixie is 0-1-0 when playing the Thunderbirds under head coach Molly Rouse. The last time the two teams met was in the Spring 2021 where the T-Birds and Blazers tied 1-1. 

KNOW YOUR FOE SUU: The Thunderbirds are 1-5-0 so far on the season. SUU is coming off a 1-0 loss to Pacific. SUU has had three goals scored by three different Thunderbirds. The T-Birds have fired off 47 shots on the season with 24 on frame and three scored goals. Keeper, Megan Short has racked up an impressive 33 saves on the season in 293 minutes.

DIXIE STATE VS. NORTHERN ARIZONA: This will be the first ever match up with NAU and Dixie State in school history.

KNOW YOUR FOE NAU: The Lumberjacks are 0-7 so far on the season. Northern Arizona is coming off a 2-6 loss to Denver.  NAU has nine goals on the season and are led by Madison Montgomery who has two goals. Keeper, Natalie Manzo has 39 saves on the season in 485 minutes. The Lumberjacks have 69 shots with 37 on frame with 46 saves and 25 corner kicks

UP NEXT: Dixie State will remain home as they start WAC action against New Mexico State and Grand Canyon.
