Volleyball swept on Day 1 at Boise State Invitational

Dixie State volleyball opened the 2021 season with two losses at the Boise State Invitational on Friday in Boise, Idaho. The Trailblazers (0-2) dropped a 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 18-25, 20-25) decision to Boise State to start the day, before falling in straight sets (18-25, 19-25, 17-25) to Montana State in the nightcap.
 
MATCH ONE – Boise State 3, Dixie State 1
 
The Trailblazers built a 15-10 lead in the first set behind six kills by Whittnee Nihipali, but Boise State answered with a 10-2 run to take a 20-17 advantage and force DSU to call timeout. The Broncos continued the run after the timeout, closing out the 25-20 win to take a 1-0 lead.
 
The second set saw DSU built its second straight 15-10 lead in a near carbon copy of the first set. Nihapali added five more kills during the run, while Hannah Howard chipped in three kills. This time, the Trailblazers would not relinquish the lead and maintained the advantage for a 25-19 triumph.
 
Dixie State dug itself out of an early 7-3 hole in the third set and kept pace with the Broncos, trailing just 17-16 late in the set. But BSU closed the frame on an 8-2 run to claim the 25-18 victory and the 2-1 lead in the match.
 
Boise state built a 7-1 lead in the fourth set and never looked back. The Trailblazers clawed their way back to within 16-14, but BSU countered with a 9-4 run to a grab a 25-20 victory and close out the match.
 
Dixie State hit .122 as a team and finished with 50 kills. Nihipali led the Trailblazers with a double-double 15 kills and 11 digs to go with a .351 hitting percentage, while Howard posted her first career double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs to go with three blocks. Kate Hardy chipped in eight kills and two blocks, while Lizzy Clark finished with six kills and three blocks, and Lauren Mena recorded 32 assists in her DSU debut.
 
MATCH TWO – Montana State 3, Dixie State 0
 
After a back and forth start in the first set, Montana State used an 11-4 run midway through the frame to build a 19-11 lead, and eventually claimed a 25-18 victory to build the early 1-0 lead.
 
Dixie State jumped out to an early 7-4 advantage in the second set behind a pair of Mykenna Nelson service aces. The teams went back and forth from there until the Bobcats wrestled away the momentum and notched a 25-19 triumph to take the commanding 2-0 advantage.
 
The Trailblazers built a 4-2 lead in the third set behind two kills from Howard, but Montana State quickly flipped the script with a 12-3 run to build a 14-7 advantage. The Bobcats maintained the lead through the rest of the frame to take a 25-17 win in the set and clinch the match.   
 
DSU hit .138 as team with 26 kills. Nihipali finished with seven kills, while Howard added six, and Hardy and Clark each chipped in five kills.
 
Dixie State will close out the Boise State Invitational with a single match vs. Long Beach State on Saturday at 12 p.m.
