Trailblazers women soccer went on their third straight road match to take a 4-0 loss to Boise State University. Despite getting 14 shots off, the Trailblazers failed to find the back of the net and couldn't keep the Broncos attack at bay.
WHAT HEAD COACH MOLLY ROUSE SAID: "In preparation for today's match we stressed the importance of staying focused on executing the details. We knew that Boise State was an excellent opponent who would pose many challenges to our team. As our group continues to learn and grow, we are fortunate to have faced such strong opposition at the start of the season. The experiences we are gaining now will no doubt benefit us in the long run of our season. Looking forward to Sunday, we will utilize today's performance as a chance to refocus on important details that ultimately impact the outcome of the match."
HOW IT HAPPENED: Boise State started off the first half with two goals in the first 12 minutes. In the 21st minute, the Trailblazers worked the possession to the 18 yard line.
Jill Bennett tried to get a shot off and couldn't find a way around five defenders. She dropped it back to
Whitley Griffiths who fired it off towards the net that was high off target.
Towards the end of the first half, Dixie State started getting more comfortable controlling the majority of the possessions. In the 41st minute, DSU was able to get off a shot on goal as Brynlee Roberts sent one to the bottom right of the net on a free kick but it was saved by the Broncos. Boise State ended the first half with a 2-0 lead over Dixie State.
In the second half, Dixie State was the first to place a shot on frame as Kalea Woodyatt hit one in the top right 20 seconds after kickoff but it was saved. Whitley Griffiths placed one on frame at the 56 minute mark but Boise State came away with another save to keep DSU off the board.
In the 67th minute the Broncos snuck a goal to push their lead to 3-0. Just two minutes later BSU found another goal to take a 4-0 lead.
The Trailblazers were able to place two shots on frame in the final minutes but a goal remained elusive and Boise State took a 4-0 win.
STAT BREAKDOWN: Jill Bennet led with two shots and both of which were on frame.
Kayla Gonzales started in the net for DSU and came away with six saves in the first half. Hollee Herick checked in for the second half and had a save herself.
Dixie State ended the game with 14 total shots and six on goal while UNM ended with 20 total shots and 10 on goal.
NOTES TO KNOW: Dixie State is now 1-2-0 overall on the season. This was the Trailblazers first game of the year that the team failed to record a goal. The Trailblazers have also yet to play a game at home and won't until Sept. 10.
UP NEXT: The Trailblazers will take on North Dakota State on Sunday, Aug. 29 in Boise, Idaho. DSU's first home game is set for Sept. 10 against Pacific.
