Dixie State saw its four-game win streak come to a halt thanks to a 10-0 loss in seven innings at Grand Canyon in the first game of a weekend WAC series Friday night at GCU Ballpark.
GCU (27-17-1/20-5 WAC) struck for all 10 runs its first four offensive frames to bolt to a commanding lead. After plating an unearned run in the first, the Lopes scored four two-out runs in the second, aided by the second DSU error in as many innings. GCU matched it with four more runs in the third and tacked on another run for good measure in the home fourth.
While the Lopes bats were sizzling, GCU ace Pierson Ohl (W, 7-1) retired the first 15 Dixie State (15-27/13-12 WAC) batters he faced, including five on strikes.
The Blazers did manage to break up Ohl's possible bid for a perfect game with a
Jagun Leavitt clean single to right center to lead off the DSU sixth.
Jake Engel followed suit with a single to left field in the seventh, however Ohl induced a fly out and a game-ending double play to keep DSU from extending the game.
The two teams will play the middle pair of their four-game weekend set on Saturday afternoon beginning at 2 p.m. (PT).
