Trailblazers Fall in Series Opener at No. 6 Arizona Thursday, 4-2

Dixie State gave No. 6 Arizona all it could handle and more, but the Trailblazers could not overcome four costly errors, as the Wildcats escaped with a 4-2 win in the first game of a three-game series on Thursday night at Hi Corbett Field. The loss snapped the Blazers' season long eight-game win streak as DSU fell to 23-31 on the year.

The Trailblazers drew first blood in their first-ever meeting with the ranked Wildcats, cashing in a one-out error on a potential double-play ball in the second inning for two runs to take an early lead.

With runners on the corners after the error, Chase Rodriguez lined a single to right field to drive in Kaden Hollow with the game's first run. Mathew Ivancich followed that up with an RBI ground out that gave DSU a 2-0 advantage.

Arizona (39-14) got one of those runs back in the home second when Tony Bullard blooped a two-out fly ball that fell just out of the grasp of a diving Lane Pritchard in right field, which allowed Kobe Kato to score from second base.

Dixie State nursed its one-run lead through the third, and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fourth. The Wildcats would again load the bases in the fifth, aided by a one-out DSU miscue, and tied the game with a two-out Kato single.

Then with two outs in the frame, Ryan Holgate drove a Jack Gonzales offering deep into the right center field gap, but DSU center fielder Jagun Leavitt made a sliding grab just in front of the warning track to deny the Wildcats a big inning.

Arizona managed to wrestle the lead away in the sixth, taking advantage of the first of two more Blazers errors on the infield to plate one run, and had two runners on and two out in the sixth. But again Dixie State escaped with limited damage as Gonzales got Branden Boissiere to look at a called third strike to end the threat.

However Bossierre would get his revenge on Gonzales in the eighth with a two-out single that drove in a Wildcat insurance run to extend the Arizona lead.

Meanwhile, Wildcat starter Chandler Murphy (ND) and two relievers combined to limit Dixie State to one hit from the third inning on to close out the win, with the one hit coming on a Pritchard lead-off single in the sixth. DSU finished with four hits on the night, all singles. In fact, all nine combined hits in the game overall were of the single variety.

Freshman righthander Dillon Holliday (ND) pitched well in his final outing of the season as he held the nation's top scoring team to just two runs (one earned) on two hits with two strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Gonzales (L, 2-5) struck out four, but was saddled with the loss after surrendering two runs (one earned) and three hits in 3.1 innings of relief.

The two teams will play game two of their weekend set on Friday night beginning at 6 p.m. (PT).
