Trailblazers Rout Seattle U in Series Finale Sunday, 14-4

Jake Engel's career day helps propel Blazers to series sweep

Jake Engel homered and drove in a career-high six runs as Dixie State completed a four-game sweep of Seattle U with a 14-4 rout in seven innings on Sunday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.

The series sweep, DSU's second-straight WAC home sweep, moved the Trailblazers to 19-30 overall. Additionally, the four wins this weekend clinched Dixie State (17-15 WAC) at least a fifth-place finish in the WAC standings in its conference debut season.

Dixie State hit five home runs on the day, four of which came in the game's first five innings, as the Trailblazers raced to a commanding 9-0 lead.

Shane Taylor set the tone on the third pitch of the DSU first with an opposite field homer to left center. For Taylor it was his sixth of the season and third of the series overall. Then with one out in the frame, Lane Pritchard went opposite field for his fifth home run of the year to spot DSU a quick 2-0 lead.

Engel picked up his first three RBI in home second as he cashed in a Drake Benner single and a Taylor two-out walk with his eighth homer of the season, a three-run blast over the left field wall, to push the Blazer advantage to 5-0.

The Trailblazers followed that up with four more runs in the fifth to extend to a nine-run cushion. DSU scored the first run thanks to a throwing error on a Taylor sacrifice bunt after Mathew Ivancich singled to lead off the frame. Engel then chased home Taylor with a base knock, which was followed two batters later by a Tanner Harper (3) two-run homer to left field.

The run support bolstered a strong start from freshman righthander Ryan Hardman (W, 2-6), who struck out a career-high tying five and limited Seattle U (13-30/7-21 WAC) to just three hits over his first five innings of work.

However the Redhawks would solve Hardman and the DSU bullpen in the sixth as Seattle U plated four runs in the stanza to cut the Blazer lead to 9-4.

Dixie State quickly shook off that Redhawk rally with five runs of its own in the home half of the inning. Harper reached on a lead off walk and Kaden Hollow doubled ahead of Tyson Fisher (6), who launched a towering three-run moon shot over the left field wall to make it an eight-run game at 12-4.

Benner was then hit by a pitch with one out, which was followed by another Ivancich single. Then after a double steal, Engel dumped a two-out single in front of the Redhawk left fielder to bring home both base runners and extend the lead to 10 runs.

Junior reliever Jed Jensen, who came on to put out the fire in the sixth, retired Seattle U in order in the seventh to send the Redhawks to their 14th-straight loss.

Engel finished with three hits on the day and in the process vaulted into solo fifth place on DSU's career hits list (183). Meanwhile the senior slugger's homer, the 30th of his stellar collegiate career, pulled him into a tie for second place on the program's career home run list. In addition, Engel's six RBI on Sunday moved him into second place in career RBI (140).

Dixie State pounded out 12 hits on the afternoon, with Hollow and Ivancich each collecting two hits, as eight of the nine Blazers in the starting line-up had at least one safety.

Dixie State closes out the home portion of its NCAA Division I debut season with its final WAC series of the year next weekend, May 20-22, with a four-game set vs. Northern Colorado.
