Blazers fall to Utes 11-3

Dixie State fell to the University of Utah Wednesday afternoon in six innings with a final score of 11-3.

How it happened: The University of Utah got on the board first thanks to a homerun down the right field line. They carried that momentum into the top of the third inning putting up five runs from four hits to take a 6-0 lead after three complete innings. 

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Maile Maletta started a two out rally beating out the throw with a slap to second base. Malory Eldredge then singled to center field to keep the momentum. Kasey Crawford then doubled to left center for an RBI and put two runners in scoring position. Laura Lockard singled through the left side for an RBI. The inning closed out and DSU trailed 6-2. 

Hannah Hughbanks started the bottom of the fifth with a double. Later, Mikaela Thomson hit a sac fly to score Hughbanks to put Dixie State behind 6-3. 

In the top of the sixth inning, the Utes put up five runs from four hits and one error to take an 11-3 lead. Dixie couldn't counter in the bottom of the sixth and the game ended early. 

At the plate: Dixie State was led by Hughbanks and Eldredge who both went 2-3 at the plate. The Trailblazers ended the game with nine hits, three runs and three RBIs. DSU didn't draw any walks and had seven strikeouts. 

In the circle:  Ashtyn Bauerle started in the circle for Dixie State and pitched three innings. She gave up six runs, six hits and three walks. She did come away with three strikeouts. 

Kate Dolinski came in and closed out the game pitching three innings. She gave up five runs and six hits and three walks. 

Notes to know:  Dixie State is now 15-18 overall on the season and remains 3-3 in WAC action.
