Dixie State saw its modest two-game win streak halted after a lopsided 77-56 defeat at the hands of Seattle U on Saturday night inside the Burns Arena.
The Trailblazers (6-9/2-6 WAC) got off to another sluggish start as they hit on just 5-of-19 from the floor and turned the ball over 10 times through the first 14-plus minutes of the game.
Meanwhile, Seattle U (8-7/1-2) took full advantage as the Redhawks hit five 3-pointers as part of a 20-6 run that turned a slim one-point DSU lead into a 26-13 advantage with 5:26 to play in the period. Seattle U would lead by as many as 15 points before taking a 36-25 spread into the halftime break.
A night after mounting a furious second half rally to take game one in this series, the Blazers looked as if they had another run in them as they came out and scored the first five points out of the break to trim the deficit to 36-30.
However Redhawk sharp-shooting guard Darrion Trammell had other ideas as he seem to answer every DSU rally. Trammell scored 20 of his game-high 30 points after halftime, this after he poured in 30 points in the DSU win the night before. Trammell nailed four 3-pointers in the frame as he helped Seattle U methodically pull away from the Trailblazers to notch the series split.
"Right now it seems we can't play two good games in a row," said DSU Head Coach Jon Judkins. "I don't know what it is but we have to try and figure it out how [Seattle U] came out with more energy than we did tonight."
Cameron Gooden led the Blazers with 17 points, 15 of which came in the second half, while
Hunter Schofield added 15 points and seven rebounds. DSU shot 33.3 percent (19-of-57) from the floor and was just 4-of-18 (.222) from beyond the arc. Dixie State managed to outrebound the Redhawks, 42-38, thanks to a team-high 10 boards from
Frank Staine, but the Blazers were hamstrung by 23 turnovers.
"[Seattle U] got into us, they got physical with us and we backed away from it," Judkins added. "We had 23 turnovers, and you can't win very many games with 23 turnovers. I thought we rebounded well, and I saw some spark, but it can't be just 10 minutes, it's got to be the whole 40 minutes of a game."
Seattle U connected on 42.1 percent (24-of-57) on its shots, including 10-of-27 (.370) from the perimeter.
Dixie State will close out the road portion of its D-I debut season next weekend, Feb. 12-13, as the Trailblazers make the short trip up Interstate-15 to face in-state foe Utah Valley. Tip-off each night in Orem is slated for 6 p.m. (MT). Â
