Softball hangs tight in 4-3 loss to Utah State

Dixie State had its best day at the Dixie State Classic today with a 4-3 loss to Utah State.

What Head Coach Randy Simkins said: "I'm pleased with the way we competed for a full seven innings today. We had quality at bats from our entire line up and gave ourselves a chance to win. I thought Ashtyn threw very well today. After one mistake in the first inning she settled down and was really good. She threw quality pitches and kept Utah State off the board."

How it happened: In the bottom of the first inning, Utah State had a three run homer to get the jump on Dixie State.

In the bottom of the second inning, Utah State singled up the middle to put a runner on first. The next batter hit a hard line drive at shortstop Kirsten Quigley who then picked the runner off on first for an inning ending double play.

Dixie State had two double plays on the day. In the bottom of the third, USU had a runner on first and the No. 4 batter in the lineup came up and hit a hard grounder and Meagan Anders on second who quickly threw the ball to Quigley waiting on two who turned it to Mikaela Thomson on first for the Trailblazers second double play of the game.

After two strong defensive innings, Dixie State was overdue for some offensive movement. In the top of the fourth inning, Shea Clements sparked some momentum for DSU with a lead off solo homerun. Kasey Crawford had a double that inning to keep things rolling.

The fifth inning was clutch for DSU. Dixie State trailed 3-1 and the top of five started off as Quigley drew a walk. Anders then drilled the right field line for a triple to score Quigley. USU made a pitching change but that didn't deter the Blazers. Malory Eldredge hit one deep into right for a sac fly but scored the runner to tie the game up.

In the top of the sixth and seventh innings, Dixie State had runners in scoring positions but weren't able to push the runners across the plate to give the Trailblazers the lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Utah State had bases loaded with one out and the Aggies came up with a walk off single to score the game winning run.

At the plate: Dixie State ended the game with three runs from eight hits in the 29 plate appearances. DSU had three RBIs, stole one base, drew three walks and had nine strikeouts. Eldredge led DSU with two hits from three at bats with one RBI and one stolen base. Crawford went 2-4 at the plate with one double on the day.

In the field: Dixie State had 20 putouts and nine assists. Thomson had the game high with eight putouts while Anders and Quigley each had three assists.

In the circle:  Ashtyn Bauerle started in the circle for Dixie State and pitched all 6.2 innings. She gave up nine hits, four runs, three errors and just two walks. She faced 31 batters.

Notes to know:  Dixie State has a 1-8 overall record on the season.
