Trailblazer Men's Soccer Blanks Incarnate Word 2-0 on Senior Day

Trailblazer men's soccer picks up a 2-0, senior night win to close out their final home match of the 2021 season.

WHAT HEAD COACH JONNY BROADHEAD SAID: "Im very proud of them. Nobody was happy with Friday night. That was something that we told the guys, "if you're not happy about it then you're going to do something about it on Sunday." They chose to keep that going. It's bigger than maybe what most people would see but inside the locker room, that means a lot to seniors. But it also means a lot to our program. To still be playing with that fight in this late in the season when a lot of people could just decide they're just out. We challenged them, during this four year transition period, while we can't do postseason. There's going to be some games where it's a little harder to get motivated, especially those second games on the weekend where you're exhausted. So to see them rise up on a day like [this] is big."

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Dixie State came off on the front foot in this game. Matt Lockwood registered the first shot of the game just five minutes into the game, but his shot went wide. Guglielmo Bianchi registered a shot of his own just moments later.

Idris Alabi brought his tekkers to this match as he went 1v1 with the Cardinals back line but he was unable to find the back of the net and the Cardinals were able to save his shot.

Then in the 26th minute Guglielmo Bianchi had a mishit attempt that went high and wide, but his shot breathed some fire into the Trailblazer attack and sparked some creativity from the rest of the team.

In the 29th minute Idris Alabi was able to capitalize on Charles Beck's mistimed save and redirect the missed free kick attempt into the back of the net for the first goal on the night.

Then, just moments after the kickoff, Daniel Brubaker was at it again for the second goal. After Alabi sprinted up the near sideline and crossed the ball into the top of the 18-yard box, Brubaker got on the end of the ball, took a few touches and slotted it home past the Cardinals keeper.

To end the half, Matt Lockwood would register another shot but Beck would make the save this time. These two goals gave the Trailblazers a 2-0 lead into the half time break.

Out of the break, the Trailblazers weren't quite as dominant as their first half, only registering four shots in the second half, but they still outshot the Cardinals who had just three second half shots.

In the 49th minute AJ Ciampini had a moment of defensive brilliance as he sprinted down the near side line and cut off the angle of the Cardinal attacker, end the counterattack the Cardinals had been building.

In the 62nd minute, Idris Alabi tested the Cardinals keeper once more off a header, but his attempt was saved.

Guglielmo Bianchi was shown yellow for unsporting conduct in the 73rd minute after a foul in the midfield.

The Trailblazers had all but closed out this game when in the 85th minute Levi Lord was forced into his only save of the game. Lord got the stop and would protect his team's clean sheet.

STAT BREAKDOWN: Goalkeeper Levi Lord started in goal for the Trailblazers and played the full 90 minutes. Lord had just one save but earned the shutout for the Trailblazers.

Dixie State registered 18 shots with 14 in the first half and four in the second half. Matt Lockwood led the team with four shots. Daniel Brubaker had three shots and Niko Shumov, Guglielmo Bianchi, Idris Alabi and Larsen Rogers each had two shots. John Joseph, Cole Shaffer and Adrian Galindo each registered a shot of their own.

The only Trailblazer to be shown yellow in this match was Guglielmo Bianchi who was shown yellow in the 73'.

NOTES TO KNOW:
Dixie State is now 3-13-1 on the season and on a one-game winning streak. The Trailblazers have just one more match remaining this season.

Dixie State has the second most saves of any team this season with 72, trailing only Chicago State who has 81. Goalkeeper Levi Lord also leads the conference in saves per game averaging 5.4.

UP NEXT: The Trailblazers will head out on the road for their final match of the season at UNLV on Nov. 6 at 7 PM.
