The Dixie State women's tennis team dropped both of their matches to Northern Arizona University on Saturday, falling 7-0 twice in Flagstaff.
"It was exciting for the girls to be able to play again," said head coach
Eric Pelton. "It was great for the new girls to get their first match under their belts and to be able to be competitive with a very solid team in our D1 debut. Lots of growth today and ready to play some more next weekend!"
Northern Arizona began the day off by sweeping the three doubles matches in first match. NAU started singles play by claiming wins in the No. 5 spot and No. 2 spot. Later in singles action, in the No. 1 spot
Kyra Harames dropped a 6-4 decision in the first set but fought to a 6-2 win in the second. Harames then played to a 7-10 loss in a tiebreaker to close out her day. To end singles play, in the No. 3 spot
Emma Templeman dropped her first set 4-6 but not before battling back to take the second set 6-4. Templeman then lost a close tiebreaker 6-10 to end her weekend.
In the second match, Dixie State dropped the doubles point as the Lumberjacks moved into singles play with the point advantage.
The highlight of singles action came in the No. 3 spot as DSU's freshman
Rachel Mellor forced her match into a tiebreaker. Mellor picked up the first set with a 7-5 score. She dropped the second set narrowly with a 4-6 score. In the tie break, Mellor stayed close but ultimately fell 10-6.
Harames had a battle in her first set in the No. 1 spot forcing it to go into extra games but fell 7-5.
Dixie State is 0-2 to start the 2021 season. The Trailblazers will be back in action and on the road, Jan. 29 against Utah State before taking on BYU in a double header on January 30. DSU's first home match will be Feb. 17 against Weber State.
