Trailblazers fall to Westminster in RMAC Semifinals Friday, 65-53

Dixie State closes the year with its best record since the 2011-12 season

The Dixie State women's basketball team saw its 2019-20 season come to a close on Friday, as it dropped a 65-53 decision to Westminster in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals in Grand Junction, Colorado.

The Trailblazers (18-12) scored five consecutive points in the first quarter to pull to within 7-5 after going scoreless over the first three minutes. London Pavlica buried a triple to pull DSU within two points, and later, Ali Franks converted a jumped to bring Dixie State to within three points at 10-7. But Westminster countered with a 12-5 run to extend the lead to 22-12.

Dixie State used a 6-0 run midway through the second quarter to cut a nine-point Westminster lead to 27-24. However, the Griffins responded with a 7-0 run to push the lead back to double digits at 34-24.

The Griffins seized control of the game in the third quarter, opening the second half on an 11-3 run to extended the lead to 45-27. From there, the teams traded baskets, and the Westminster lead hovered around 15 points until the fourth quarter.

The Trailblazers made a final push late in the fourth quarter, trimming the lead to 61-53 at the 2:51 mark on a Franks layup. However, a pair of DSU turnovers and two more Westminster baskets would put the game out of reach.
Dixie State shot 32 percent (17-of-52) from the field, 21 percent (4-of-19) from 3-point range, and 83 percent (15-of-18) from the free throw line. Madi Loftus finished with a game-high 19 points to lead the Trailblazers, while Franks added 18 points. Chesney Stevens chipped in seven points and nine rebounds.

Despite the loss, the Trailblazers close the year with an 18-12 mark, its best record since the 2011-12 season (18-8).
