Dixie State softball will open the 2020 season this week, playing a total of seven games in five days at Karl Brooks Field and the Canyons Softball Complex.
 
The Trailblazers will kick things off with a doubleheader against Central Washington on Tuesday at Karl Brooks Field. First pitch is set for Noon.
 
Dixie State will then host the 2020 Courtyard Softball Classic at the Canyons Softball Complex. The tournament, which will feature 14 NCAA Division II teams from five different conferences, will begin on Thursday and run through Saturday.
 
The Trailblazers will lead off the tournament against Hawai'i Hilo on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. DSU will take on St. Mary's (12:30 p.m.) and Concordia-Portland (3 p.m.) on Friday, before closing play on Saturday vs. Cal State Dominguez Hills (12:30 p.m.) and Western Washington (3 p.m.).

ALL-TIME IN SEASON OPENERS: Dixie State owns a 9-4 all-time record in season openers, including a 5-4 mark at Karl Brooks Field. The Trailblazers have won four of their last five season-openers, including a 14-6 victory over Western New Mexico last season at the Canyons Softball Complex.

ALL-TIME VS. CENTRAL WASHINGTON: Tuesday's opening game marks the seventh meeting between Dixie State and Central Washington. The teams first met on Feb. 11, 2011, at the Las Vegas Desert Stinger tournament where DSU claimed a 4-1 win to spark a five-game win streak in the series for the Trailblazers. The Wildcats earned a 2-0 win over DSU at the 2016 NCAA West Regionals in Azusa, California, for its lone win over the Trailblazers. Dixie State holds a 5-1 series lead, including a 2-0 mark in St. George.
 
ALL-TIME VS. HAWAI'I HILO: Thursday's game marks the 38th meeting between Dixie State and Hawai'i Hilo. The teams first met on April 18, 2007, in Hilo, Hawaii. The Vulcans won the inaugural matchup, 2-1, sparking a three-game streak for UHH in the series. DSU earned its first victory a year later in a 7-1 win in Hilo on March 10, 2008. The Trailblazers have won 12 of the last 13 matchups and hold a 26-11 series lead, including a 17-2 mark in St. George.
 
ALL-TIME VS. ST. MARY'S: Friday's game marks the first meeting between Dixie State and St. Mary's.
 
ALL-TIME VS. CONCORDIA-PORTLAND: Friday's game marks the first meeting between Dixie State and Concordia-Portland.
 
ALL-TIME VS. CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS: Saturday's game marks the 10th meeting between Dixie State and Cal State Dominguez Hills. The teams met in four consecutive seasons (2009-12) at the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, California, splitting the four matchups. Since then, the Toros have won five out of the last six matchups, including two out of three in the 2013 NCAA Division II West Regionals.
 
ALL-TIME VS. WESTERN WASHINGTON: Saturday's game marks the eighth meeting between Dixie State and Western Washington. The teams first met on Feb. 11, 2011, at the Las Vegas Desert Stinger. The Vikings claimed an 8-1 win in the inaugural matchup, sparking a three-game win streak. Since then, DSU has won the last four matchups, including a 5-0 win at the 2017 NCAA West Regionals and victories in the 2018 and 2019 DSU Softball Classic, to take a 4-3 lead in the series.
 
IN THE RANKINGS: Dixie State will enter the season outside of the Preseason NFCA Division II Top-25 for the first time since 2017. The Trailblazers enter the 2020 campaign in the "Receiving Votes" section of the poll.  
 
DSU TABBED AS RMAC PRESEASON FAVORITE: For the second consecutive season, the Trailblazers have been selected as the RMAC preseason favorite. Dixie State came in atop the 2020 Preseason Poll after receiving seven out of a possible 13 first-place votes to garner a total of 133 points. DSU edged out Colorado Mesa in the poll, which received three first-place votes and earned 131 points. Colorado Christian landed at No. 3 with two first-place votes, while MSU Denver and Colorado School of Mines rounded out the top-5 at fourth and fifth. Junior pitcher Cambrie Hazel, sophomore pitcher Carissa Burgess, and junior infielder Mikaela Thomson were each named to the RMAC Preseason Players to Watch list.
 
THE SIMKINS FILE: Two-time Pacific West Conference Coach of the Year Randy Simkins returns for his 12th season inside the Trailblazer dugout. In 11 seasons at DSU, Simkins has posted a 464-131 record (.780), leading the Trailblazers to four regular-season PacWest Conference championships and the 2019 RMAC Tournament title. Additionally, Simkins has led Dixie State to 11 consecutive NCAA Division II Regional appearances, including four Super-Region appearances and a berth in the 2015 NCAA Division II National Championship game.
 
2020 ROSTER: Dixie State returns seven starters from the 2019 squad, led by All-Region honoree Cambrie Hazel and Carissa Burgess.
 
Hazel garnered second team All-RMAC and All-Region honors as a sophomore during the 2019 season, closing the season with an 18-7 record and a 1.98 ERA. She was named RMAC Pitcher of the Week twice, and finished the year in the top-5 in the RMAC in six categories, including a conference-best 215 strikeouts. The 215 strikeouts also marked a DSU single-season record. Additionally, Hazel struck out 10 or more batters 10 times during the regular season and recorded a career-high 15 strikeouts against Regis on March 30. She also posted seven shutouts and limited opposing batters to a .177 average.
 
Burgess exploded onto the scene as a freshman in 2019, earning an RMAC-best 23 wins (23-5 record), while posting a 2.46 ERA. Burgess logged 85 strikeouts and allowed just 26 walks in 159.2 innings pitched. Additionally, Burgess tossed 19 complete games and five shutouts.
 
Dixie State returns five other starters from the 2019 season, including junior infielder Mikaela Thomson (.323/30 H/21 RBI/3 HR/3 2B), senior outfielder Brenna Cornwall (.296/42 H/16 RBI/4 2B), sophomore outfielder Kasey Crawford (.263/36 H/18 RBI/3 2B/2 3B), senior infielder Kori Gahn (.246/32 H/30 RBI/7 HR/5 2B), and senior outfielder Riley Tyteca (.356/21 H/18 RBI/3 HR/3 2B).
 
The Trailblazers also return senior catcher Destiny Diaz, senior infielder Kirsten Quigley, junior infielder/catcher Meagan Anders, junior infielder Emma Sweet, redshirt sophomore outfielder Malory Eldredge, freshman pitcher Ashtyn Bauerle, sophomore outfielder Ashley Jones, and sophomore catcher Lindsay Allfillisch.
 
Seven new freshmen join the 2020 squad, including Shea Clements, Maile Maletta, Brylee Rudd, Kaylan Walker, Hannah Hughbanks, Laura Lockard, and Brianna Castellon.
 
UP NEXT: The Trailblazers will host Northwest Nazarene in a doubleheader next Monday at Karl Brooks Field, beginning at 11 a.m.
