Trailblazers Roll Past Saint Katherine on Saturday, 86-48

Dixie State holds an opponent without a 3-point make for the first time in its NCAA Era

Jacob Nicolds and Jared Greene paced a balanced Trailblazer scoring attack, while the Blazer defense made a little program history, as Dixie State remained perfect in its Division I debut after an 86-48 rout of Saint Katherine on Saturday afternoon inside the Burns Arena. DSU's 38-point margin of victory on Saturday was the fifth-largest in the program's NCAA era.

The Trailblazers (2-0) led wire-to-wire, thanks in large part to hitting on 12 of their first 16 shots to race out to a 26-12 lead nearly nine minutes in. Greene got the momentum going for his side as he scored the first six points of a 10-0 DSU spurt to open the game. In all, five different Blazers hit at least one shot, while Dixie State registered 10 assists on those first 12 made field goals.

Leading 40-28 at the half, Dixie State quickly put the game out of reach with a decisive 21-6 run, which turned a 12-point halftime bulge into a 61-34 advantage with 12:57 left after a Nicolds lay-in and free throw. DSU would push its lead to as many as 40 points late before settling for the 38-point win.

"Overall I was happy how we played," DSU Head Coach Jon Judkins said. "The challenge sometimes when you get big leads is you stop playing, you stop learning, and you stop getting better. We challenged our guys defensively to hold [Saint Katherine] to under 50 [points], which we did, and just little things like that go along way with our team.

"It was a good win for us and now we jump into our [final exams]," Judkins added. "Hopefully they can get their studying done this week and we can prepare for [first D-I road game at] Denver."

Nicolds and Greene both connected on 6-of-8 from the floor, while the tandem also just missed their first double-doubles in a Blazer uniform by one carom. Nicolds led the way with 14 points, a career-high nine rebounds, two assists and two steals in 18 minutes of play.

Meanwhile Greene tallied 12 points (all in the first half) with a career-best nine boards in 16 minutes. In all, 12 of the 14 Trailblazers who got on the court Saturday scored at least three points.

Dixie State shot 47.9 percent from the floor (34-of-71), highlighted by a 12-of-29 effort (.414) from the perimeter. After knocking down just one 3-pointer in their season-opening win vs. North Dakota last Wednesday night, the Trailblazers reached double figures in 3-point makes for just the 20th-time in the program's NCAA era.

The Blazers also outrebounded SKU by a 51-34 margin, including a 16-11 edge on the offensive glass, and finished with 22 assists to just 12 turnovers (four after halftime).

While Dixie State was knocking down 3-pointers, the Trailblazers were making a little history on the defensive side of things. For the first time in the program's NCAA era (390 games), DSU held a team without a 3-point make as the Firebirds misfired on all 18 of their shots from beyond the arc.

SKU finished the game 19-of-62 (.306) from the floor overall, which included an 8-of-27 clip (.296) in the second half. Firebird guard Johnnie Coleman led all scorers with 19 points.

Dixie State will hit the road for the first time as a Division I program next Saturday, Dec. 12, as the Trailblazers begin a three-game road swing in the "Mile High City" with an afternoon matinee at the University of Denver. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
