ST. GEORGE, Utah – Dixie State women's basketball continued the 2020-21 season and fell 63-53 to Portland State Wednesday night.
What head coach JD Gustin said: "Super proud of our kids, didn't play well offensively but they were still very competitive for three quarters. It was a great game to build from."
How it happened: Dixie State had a slow start in the first quarter going on a six minute scoring drought with no made field goals, while Portland State went on an 8-0 run. A made free throw by
London Pavlica broke the scoring drought and that sparked a 12-3 run in the final two minutes of the quarter. Dixie State had a 14-11 lead over Portland State.
Dixie State started the second quarter with an 8-2 run. The Blazers hit a lag in the second quarter and Portland State took advantage of it, cutting DSU's lead to just three points going into halftime.
The Trailblazers started the second half with a 6-0 run. The Vikings answered with a 9-2 run to take a 40-39 lead with two minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Portland State took off on a 12-3 run to start the fourth quarter and the Trailblazers couldn't come back at that point and the Vikings claimed the 63-53 win.
Leaders: Dixie State had two Trailblazers score in double figures. Both
Emily Isaacson and
Keslee Stevenson recorded 10 points.
Maggie McCord had eight points while
Hannah Robins and
Shay Potter each recorded seven.
Robins rocked the boards for DSU as she pulled down 10 rebounds. London Pavlica recorded five assists for the game high.
Comparison: Dixie State shot 34 percent from the field, 33 percent from the three and 54 percent from the free throw line. DSU pulled down 42 total boards and came away with 11 assists, 19 turnovers. DSU had 10 points in the paint, nine off of turnovers, and 18 off the bench.
Portland State shot 38 percent from the field, 33 percent from the three and 69 percent from the free throw line. The Vikings pulled down 38 total boards and had 13 assists, 10 steals and 12 turnovers.
The Vikings had 22 points in the paint, 11 off of turnovers and 11 of the bench.
Notes to know: Dixie State is now 1-1 on the season. Up next, The Trailblazers will head to Southern Utah on Monday, Dec. 21 for their first road game of the season.
