Trailblazers drop season opener to CSU-Pueblo Saturday, 36-7

DSU sets new single-game attendance record

A Trailblazer Stadium record 6,512 fans packed the stadium to see the Dixie State football team take on No. 9 CSU-Pueblo on Saturday, but the festivities were spoiled as the Thunderwolves claimed a 36-7 victory in the 2019 season opener.

The teams traded punts throughout the majority of the first quarter before a DSU interception set up the first scoring opportunity of the game.

After the turnover, CSU-Pueblo began an air raid that would continue most of the first half, completing a 50-yard strike to move to the DSU 20-yard line. Then, following two run plays, the Thunderwolves seemed poised to find the end zone. But the Trailblazer defense rose to the occasion, stopping CSUP on three consecutive tries inside the 5-yard line to limit the visitors to a field goal and a 3-0 lead.

The Thunderwolves would tack on 17 points in the second quarter, while the CSUP defense stymied the Trailblazers offense to take a 20-0 lead into the halftime break.

Dixie State forced a CSUP three-and-out to open the second half, then seemed to find a groove offensively as D'Arman Notoa rushed for six yards and caught a 5-yard pass for a first down. Kody Wilstead then found Rickie Johnson for an 17-yard pass near midfield. But the drive eventually stalled, and DSU was forced to punt.

CSU-Pueblo went back to the ground game on the subsequent drive, marching down the field on 77 yards rushing to push the lead to 26-0.
The Trailblazers countered on their next drive, marching 92 yards in 12 plays to cut the lead 26-7 late in the third quarter. Keaton Mott opened the drive with a 17-yard pass to Jalen Powell, then connected with Xavier Smith for 23 yards to move to the DSU 48-yard line. Two plays later, Sei-J  Lauago broke free for a 15-yard run, followed by a CSUP pass interference penalty. DSU wasted no time taking advantage of the penalty, as Mott tossed to Powell for a 19-yard touchdown pass on the next play.

However, CSU-Pueblo quickly squelched any thoughts of a DSU comeback, adding another field goal and touchdown to secure the 36-7 victory.

Dixie State finished the game with 210 yards (151 pass, 59 rush) of total offense. Mott completed 10-of-21 passes for 112 yards and one touchdown, while Wilstead completed 7-of-12 passes. Powell finished with eight catches for 65 yards and a touchdown to lead the DSU receiving corps.

Alex Lilliard led the Trailblazer defense with a career-high 11 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Malaki Malaki added eight tackles, while Darrius Nash chipped in seven tackles.

Dixie State opens a three-game road swing next week with a Saturday afternoon tilt at Fort Lewis. Kickoff is set for Noon.
