Dixie State won its third-straight season opener Thursday night on the strength of a 6-1 result over Cal State San Bernardino at Trailblazer Stadium.
The Trailblazers (1-0-0/0-0-0 RMAC) raced out of the gate with a pair of first half goals, the first of which was a gift of sorts as the Coyotes (0-1-0) defense misplayed a ball meant to be kicked back to the goalkeeper for an own goal, which gave DSU a 1-0 lead midway through the 26
th-minute.
Then with 1:18 to play before the halftime break,
Kelsey Cook played a ball to
Breesa Nawahine on the left wing, who finished just inside the 18-yard box to stake her side to a 2-0 halftime edge. CSUSB would quickly strike back with a goal of its own just 2:19 into the second stanza when Kelly Kevershan tucked home a chance from 10-yards out to cut the DSU lead in half at 2-1.
Dixie State answered nearly four minutes later when
Alexa Ashton headed home a
Kilee Allsop corner kick to again push the Blazer lead to two goals. The Trailblazers would add on another insurance goal in the 68
th-minute with a
Jaci Cook-Dandos goal to extend to a 4-1 advantage. Cook corralled a loose ball and found Cook-Dandos, who found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.
DSU tacked on two more goals for good measure in the final 10-plus minutes as
Zoe Clark and
Brynlie Ivie both struck for their first career goals to close out the scoring. While the Blazer offense was hitting on all cylinders (17 shots/12 SOG), the Dixie State defense picked up right where the unit left off last season as DSU limited the Coyotes to just five total shots, one on frame.
Dixie State will return to action this Saturday afternoon against Seattle Pacific at Trailblazer Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 12:30 p.m.
