Dixie State football is back on the road this week for the second game of a season-long, three-game road swing, and will make the trek to Las Vegas, New Mexico, for a Saturday afternoon clash against New Mexico Highlands.
Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., with live video and live stats provided by the NMHU athletics staff at portal.stretchinternet.com/nmhu.
ALL-TIME VS. NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS: Saturday's game marks the fourth meeting between Dixie State and New Mexico Highlands. The Trailblazers won the first meeting in the 2016 season-opener, a 21-14 triumph inside Trailblazer Stadium. The Cowboys returned the favor during the 2017 season opener, handing Dixie State a heartbreaking 23-22 loss in Las Vegas, New Mexico. DSU held a 22-7 lead entering the fourth quarter, but couldn't hold on as NMHU stormed back to claim the victory. The Trailblazers responded with a 28-23 win last season to take a 2-1 series lead, with the home team winning each of the first three matchups.
KNOW YOUR FOE: New Mexico Highlands enters the week with an 0-2 overall record and the same mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Cowboys were handed a 7-0 week-one loss to Fort Lewis after the season-opener was halted due to lightning in the second quarter. NMHU dropped a 41-27 decision to Adams State last week in its first full game of the season.
The Cowboys finished the game with 375 yards of total offense, including 207 yards on the ground. Running back Kam Mosby led the rushing attack with 98 yards and one touchdown on 14 attempts. Quarterback Gunner Mefferd completed 6-of-24 passes for 87 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively, NMHU allowed 569 yards of total offense, including 472 passing yards and five touchdowns through the air. Defensive back Malik Brown led the Cowboys defense with a game-high 12 tackles and one interception.
Kicker Israel Farfan connected on 2-of-3 field goal attempts, including a long of 36 yards, to lead the special teams.
LAST TIME OUT: Dixie State overcame a 14-0 halftime deficit at Fort Lewis on Saturday to earn a 23-14 win in its first road game of the 2019 season. After totaling just 126 yards of total offense in the first half, the Trailblazers exploded for 311 yards of offense in the second half, while holding the Skyhawks to just 105 yards of production over the final two quarters. The Trailblazers finished the game with 437 yards (368 pass, 69 rush) of total offense. Kody Wilstead completed 16-of-32 passes for 327 yards and three touchdowns. Conner Miller finished with a team-high 110 yards receiving and one touchdown on three catches.
Defensively, Dixie State allowed 328 yards (212 pass, 116 rush) of total offense. Darrius Nash and Simote Lokotui finished with a team-best seven tackles, while Nash added an interception and Lokotui added two sacks.
GIVE ME THAT BALL: The Trailblazers tallied their first three defensive takeaways of the season on Saturday, including a critical strip-sack by Alex Lilliard and a game-sealing interception by Darrius Nash.
MAKING HISTORY: Saturday's 23-14 win marked DSU's first win in a road-opener since joining the NCAA Division II ranks in 2006.
A record-setting 6,512 fans packed Trailblazer Stadium on September 7 to watch DSU take on CSU-Pueblo. The mark snapped the previous single-game attendance record of 5,498 set last year against Fort Lewis.
UP NEXT: Dixie State wraps up its three-game road swing next week with a trip to South Dakota Mines in Rapid City, South Dakota.
