Trailblazers split on RMAC Tourney Day 2

DSU defeats Colorado Christian, falls to Colorado Mesa

The Dixie State softball team played to a split of its two games on Friday in the second day of action at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament in Grand Junction, Colorado.

The Trailblazers (39-11) claimed a 3-1 win in the first game of the day, as Bailey Gaffin belted a three-run home in the third inning to lead DSU past No. 2 seed Colorado Christian. Dixie State fell just short in the nightcap, dropping a 2-1 decision to No. 1 Colorado Mesa.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 3, Colorado Christian 1

The Trailblazers and Cougars played a game of copycat through the first two innings of the day's first game. Both teams would strand two runners in the first inning, and both went down in order in the second inning.

Dixie State broke the trend and the scoreless tie in the top of the third. Kaitlyn Delange drew a leadoff hit-by-pitch to open the frame, then moved to second on a Brenna Cornwall bunt single. Two pitches later, Gaffin gave DSU a 3-0 lead when she blasted her third home run of the season over the fence in right field.

Colorado Christian trimmed the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth on a line drive laced off third base and into left field. But the Cougars would get no closer, as the Trailblazers retired six of the last seven CCU batters to clinch the win.

Cornwall, Gaffin, and Jessica Gonzalez each posted two hits in the win, while Carissa Burgess (21-4) earned the win in the pitcher's circle, striking out three CCU batters in the complete-game victory.

GAME TWO – Colorado Mesa 2, Dixie State 1

With a trip to the RMAC Tournament Championship on the line, Dixie State looked to start off with a bang in the nightcap. The Trailblazers used a single and back-to-back walks to load the bases with just one out in the top of the first. However, the visitors were unable to capitalize on the opportunity, and the next two batters were retired.

Meanwhile, Colorado Mesa took advantage of a leadoff hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the first, using a sacrifice bunt and an RBI-single to left field to take a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks added to the lead in the fifth inning, scoring on a DSU fielding error to push the lead to 2-0.

Dixie State countered in the top of the sixth with back-to-back doubles. Gaffin recorded the first, lacing the first pitch to left center field. Then, after working to a full count, Gonzalez hit the eighth pitch of her at-bat to the base of the fence in right center score Gaffin from second and cut the lead to 2-1 with no outs. But DSU would get no closer, as the Mavericks retired the next six Trailblazers to seal the win.

Gaffin led DSU at the plate in the nightcap with two hits, while Cambrie Hazel (17-6) recorded two strikeouts and allowed four hits in the loss.

The Trailblazers will battle No. 5 MSU Denver in an elimination game on Saturday at 11 a.m., with the winner advancing to the championship round vs. Colorado Mesa. The Roadrunners earned a 10-4 win over No. 4 Colorado School of Mines.
