Junior righthander
Preston Hannay struck out a career-high eight and scattered one run on three hits over seven innings complete to help lead Dixie State to a convincing 10-1 victory over MSU Denver Sunday afternoon at the Legacy Athletic Complex. The win helped the Trailblazers salvage a split of their four-game RMAC road series at MSUD as DSU moved to 25-13 overall, 15-9 in conference play.
Hannay (W, 4-3) retired 12 of the first 15 Roadrunners (25-11/18-6 RMAC) he faced, five of which on strikes, while the Blazer defense turned a big 6-4-3 double play for him in the fourth inning. The Trailblazer offense gave the righthander all the runs he would need over the first four innings, including a pair
Alec Flemetakis RBI-singles in the second and fourth frames, while
Tyson Fisher stole home in the fourth to give DSU a 3-0 lead.
Dixie State added an insurance run in the sixth on a
Tyler Hollow sacrifice fly, while Hannay kept MSUD off the scoreboard until the seventh, when Roadrunner first baseman Jake Kistaitis spoiled the shut out bid with a one-out solo home run.
The Trailblazers then put the game away in the ninth with a big two-out, six-run rally. Seven consecutive Blazer hitters reached with two outs in the stanza, including five on base hits, highlighted by RBI-singles from
Wyatt Branch,
Lane Pritchard,
Braden Stutzman and Hollow.
Flemetakis finished with three hits and two RBI to lead DSU offensively, while
Jake Engel went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and Hollow collected two hits and two RBI as Dixie State outhit MSUD 15-4.
Tyler Rosas (S, 1) recorded his first save of the season with two innings of one-hit relief with a strikeout to close out the win.
Dixie State returns home for an eight-game homestand, starting with a four-game series vs. Regis on Easter Weekend, April 18-20, at Bruce Hurst Field.
