Trailblazers edged by Colorado Mesa Saturday, 72-59

Dixie State women's basketball dropped a 72-59 decision to No. 16 Colorado Mesa on Saturday inside the Burns Arena.

The Trailblazers (12-9, 8-9 RMAC) found themselves in an early 10-2 hole midway through the first quarter, but responded with a 14-4 run over the next three minutes to take a 16-14 lead. London Pavlica sparked the run with a steal and layup, followed by a Madi Loftus 3-pointer. Ali Franks added five points with a triple and a layup to give DSU the advantage.

Colorado Mesa seized control of the momentum throughout the middle quarters of the game, outscoring DSU 38-22 over the second and third periods to build a 57-41 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

DSU cut the lead to 62-52 at the 5:46 mark when Keslee Stevenson completed a four-point play after being fouled on a 3-pointer. But the Trailblazers would get no closer, as the Mavericks matched each DSU basket down the stretch.

Dixie State shot 38 percent (18-of-47) from the field, 29 percent (7-of-26) from 3-point range, and 64 percent (16-of-25) from the free throw line. Franks led three DSU players in double figures with 14 points, while Morgan Myers added 12 points and nine rebounds, and Loftus finished with 10 points.

The Trailblazers take their final regular season trip next week for a Friday matchup at Adams State and a Saturday tilt at Fort Lewis.
