Trailblazers defeat La Sierra Friday in home opener, 77-59

The Dixie State women's basketball team opened its home schedule in winning fashion on Friday, claiming a 77-59 victory over La Sierra inside the Burns Arena.

The Trailblazers (2-1) turned a 9-6 deficit midway through the first quarter into a 26-13 lead, closing the frame on a 20-4 run. Ashley Greenwood sparked the run with a pair of free throws, then dished to Deshka Olson who swished her first 3-pointer as a Trailblazer on the next possession. Ali Franks and London Pavlica added 3-pointers during the run as the home squad built its first double-digit lead.

Dixie State picked up where it left off in the second quarter, stretching the run to 25-4 after Breaunna Gillen hit a jumper and Keslee Steven buried a triple to push the lead to 31-13. La Sierra countered with a quick 6-0 run before Madi Loftus connected from outside to stop the run. The teams traded baskets from there, and DSU took a 46-30 lead into the halftime break.

The Trailblazers stretched the lead past the 20-point mark in the third quarter when Greenwood took a pass from Emily Isaacson and nailed a 3-pointer to push the lead to 55-34. DSU went on to push the lead to a game-high mark of 27 points at 67-40 later in the frame, before the Golden Eagles converted a traditional 3-point play to end the third quarter.

La Sierra opened the fourth quarter with three consecutive baskets to cut the lead to 67-49 less than 90 seconds into the period. DSU responded when Gillen scored five consecutive points, including a 3-pointer, to push the lead back to 72-49. The teams traded baskets over the final four minutes until the Golden Eagles closed the game on a 5-0 run to push the score to the final tally of 77-59.

Dixie State shot 38 percent (27-of-71) from the field and 37 percent (11-of-29) from 3-point range. DSU converted 12-of-12 free throw attempts, the second time this season the Trailblazers have been perfect from the line. Franks led all scorers, matching her career high with 23 points to go with eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Loftus added 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc, while Isaacson finished with six points, four assists, and a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Trailblazers will close the weekend with a Saturday afternoon matchup against Life Pacific. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
